Can somebody explain to me why our smart meter is showing that we're using gas after the heating and boiler have switched off?

Is it on a usage delay?

I only ask as the electricity side of things is pretty instantaneous in terms of seeing when things are switched on and off.

You might want to check if it's stopped in an hour, and if not, twist the valve to totally cut it off. If it still runs, get someone in to see it.

Apparently the electricity side of the meter is instant in polling usage and the gas side polls every 30 minutes.

        And breathe...

Breakthrough in nuclear fusion could mean ‘near-limitless energy’ | Nuclear power | The Guardian
Researchers are said to have made a breakthrough in nuclear fusion by managing to generate more energy than they put in. The results are now going to be put through verification but if it holds then a major step toward near limitless, clean energy creation will have been made.

nice, but how many decades away from actually supplying power to us?

Startrek warp cores bitches time to go to space.

I'm really surprised that nobody's bumped these people off clean cheap unlimited energy for everyone completely changes the order and power of the world.

This definitely sounds like the premise to a sci-fi disaster story like Space: 1999 or The Quiet Earth.

There are a few hurdles yet though
1: They need to reliably repeat this
2: They haven't figured out any feasible ways of capturing this energy
3: The energy output is so large that they haven't found a way to contain it

But yeah its a big deal to get more out then they put in.

                    seems apt

With -7 degree temps we've now started using the heating for 1 hour per day, the hour before the kids go to bed

That's probably £400 per month right there

I had an email from bulb saying that my electric unit rates are going down by around 0.3p! It's a Christmas miracle

My two youngest daughters sleep on the top floor of our house which is usually -2 degrees lower in the winter than the thermostat is set at (on the middle floor where we are).

Both of them have made the midnight pilgrimage down to sleep in our bed the last week and you know what... they are far more cost effective than electric blankets. An entire family in one bed is where the real savings are... just like in the old days.

Our meter is already knocking on £30 for this week.

OVO have taken over our energy supply. Despite having a smart meter we had a card through the door today from Morrisons Data asking for gas and electric meter readings.
