First, I sometimes wonder if a huge part of the Ghostbusters fanbase is more about the first movie and the cartoon show, The Real Ghostbusters. It's easy to think of that as a cultural blip but it ran for seven seasons with over 140 episodes. It was broadcasting new episodes for a pretty solid 5 years, meaning it had a strong TV presence for longer, and its toys sold really well. I think most kids born in the 80s probably had some of them, or had a friend with them.
Second, I also think that Ghostbusters is one of those weird franchises where its logo has a life of its own. Kinda like... There was a period in the 00s where there were tons of student-age women with a pinboard and scrapbook and a poster of Paris in their dorm room, who had a pair of tight jogging pants with a glittery Playboy Bunny emblazoned on the backside. I would posit that few of those women read Playboy, and I'll further assert that 99% of them had never even held an issue of Playboy. They just like the logo and the cultural ideas it represents; a playful sexuality. The Ghostbusters logo is kinda like that, but for nebulous canon of "80s movies".
