I'm in Osaka at the moment (using the PSP), is there anywhere game shop wise I should check out? Or should I just hold out for Akiba? Den Den Town is just around the corner but I'll give it a miss if its not worth the effort.

Think others have said that Akiba doesn't have the bargains that it once had (I've not been since 2001 so wouldn't know), but did go to Den Den town last year and it didn't seem so cheap, our local GEO was cheaper both on hard and soft in comparison to the shops we saw.
Still may be well worth a look though.

There are still 2 or 3 shops in Akihabara with bargains, namely MediaLand (almost opposite Club SEGA), Tokiwa Musen (out of the Electric Town exit, turn left, it's next to a glasses shop and VERY small) and the Softmap near Yoshinoya.
I've never been to Osaka so I don't know...where's Darwock when you need him...

That video was awesome, it was in the Metro this morning, too
There's something rather Zelda-esque about that officer blocking his strike with his shield like that
I also loved the monkey in the train station, and the monkey waiters at that restaurant. I'm definitely gonna try finding that restaurant!

EDIT: He is British, right?
Unfortunatley so and the dude managed to get released - suprised he didn't get a 10 year scentence...
Police on Wednesday released a British tourist who shocked onlookers by swimming naked in the moat of Japan's Imperial Palace, concluding he had mental problems. The bald, heavy-set and visibly agitated man was chased by officers around the palace for two hours on Tuesday. He dived into the moat then…

Den Den Town is not as instantly gratifying as Akihabara, but if you look carefully (like, spend a whole day there and check out all the side streets as well) you can find some great surprises. Shops seem to change quite regularly unfortunately... one of my favourite shops that was there in 2007 isn't there any more for example.
(*this shop is awesome for soundtracks too, if you go up to the 2nd floor)Last edited by Darwock; 09-10-2008, 00:35.

Took a stroll down there early this morning but obviously it was closed, and guess its not quite the same in daylight. Going to head out for food in a moment out that way so I may take another peek. Spotted Super Potato, there was a board outside advertising 2nd hand copies of Radient Silvergun.
*EDIT*
Just come back for dinner, didn't end up going back to Den Den Town again after all. I did pay a visit to Joypolis earlier though, wasn't impressed, not that many games there, just loads of novelty crap.Last edited by MonkeyWrench; 09-10-2008, 14:14.

If you had taken a stroll down the covered shopping street (Higashidori) not far from Hep 5 there are plenty of 'serious' arcades where you get less puri-kura and a lot more streetfighterLast edited by Darwock; 09-10-2008, 14:57.

Oh god, HEP 5! I remember going to Umeda to visit it after googling, and seeing the building out the train window and nearly falling over myself
I can't remember if I actually found it, though. I think that was the day I was looking for an ATM and ended up running around for almost an hour trying to find one with about 100 yen to my name. Once I finally got my money out (God bless Citibank. Every time I pass the branch near my uni I have a big smile) I think I wasn't in the mood to go. Or maybe I did? I can't remember now!
I used to visit this Club Sega which I think was near Osaka station (or maybe Umeda), I can't remember now. It was more-or-less opposite the station and took up the top two floors of this mall. I went there a few times to hammer their Typing of the Dead machine (got my name quite high up in the high score table, too!)

Eventually made it to Akiba today, out of all the places I`ve been to so far in Tokyo that was by far the busiest, and had the most westerners I`ve seen in one place. Ended up buying a few retro compilations for the PSP (Capcom, Salamander and Parodius) from a 2nd hand store (e-trader or something). Wandered around for ages trying to find Super Potato and just when I was about to call it a day I looked up and found itBrilliant place, loved the chair made out of carts! Prices weren`t that great for new stuff, especially electronic items. Cameras were about the same price as they are in the UK.
Off to Ebisu and Shibuya tomorrow, hoping to find the flagship store for Onitsuka Tigers as I`ve got money burning a hole in my pocket. Also going to head out to the Ninja restaraunt for a few bevvies and a bit of food.
