It was obviously meant in jest. I've become paranoid abbout the sizes after being warned about it by various people.

This is what was said in jest, right?

My experience has been quite the opposite - not only do they not keep a stock of them, but they rarely insist that a guy puts one on.

I'm definitely borrowing that for something to tell people that gives them over-expectations for when they come here. It's getting a little old saying that the Japan Self Defence Force uses Gundam suits. And now that I am married, I no longer have a chance to tell my young female cousins that they shouldn't be bridesmaids because in Japan they sacrifice the bridesmaids after the wedding.

That's hardly believable. How on earth would they build their snowmen in Gundam suits?

I think I phrased it incorrectly. I didn't mean that Japanese girls have a massive stockpile of condoms in the bedroom. I meant that, in a relationship, it is (apparently) generally the female who buys the condoms, hence the fact that the condoms are usually placed alongside the sanitary towels in supermarkets.

Though of course, from what you're saying, that's not necessarily the case anyway.

I dispute that any Japanese girls buy condoms. How else are they going to get pregnant? Sweeping statements aside, most of the hanky-panky that goes on in this country goes on at love hotels anyway, where condoms are provided. That is where you definitely want to bring your own though, I've never had a problem with size when buying my own, but using love hotel provided ones left me in fear of a gangrenous dick. Good job I can't last very long.

Wasn't planning on going on holiday this year but due to the amount of **** going on I figured I needed a break. Granted there's still a way to go before everything settles down which is why I'm thinking back end of the year but the lure of Tokyo is just too strong.

What's it like in October? Brief Internet research shows the weather to be generally favourable and with the nights drawing in it's a great time to see more neon.

                Thoughts?

                  Don't think about it...do it!

I went middle to end of Sept and weather was perfect. Still quite warm but not overbearing.

It's just starting to get cold (in Tokyo anyway) at the end of October. Not unbearable at all if you live in the UK.

The nights are never short, so there will be plenty of neon all year round. Even in the summer it is dark by 7pm.

                      *sigh*

I want to go back for a visit this year too. I just need someone to look after my cat.

My Mum has already said she'll take care of my cat should I go out there later in the year.

This is one of the reasons I've never bothered getting a cat.

On my way to Japan next Sunday and finding it tricky to stock up on camera gear beforehand. Would it be worth it getting Compact Flash cards and batteries for a Canon EOS 7D over there?

How do UK vs Japan prices for gadgets compare in general these days? Back wen it was 250 Yen to the pound, it was bliss!

I don't know about flash cards and batteries, but Canon lenses were about half of their Italian price (international warranty of course). I would have bough two new lenses if I knew that I would reach home without troubles (went to Japan during the last year Iceland volcano eruption).

I always found flashcards cheaper in the UK than anywhere else I was. Annoyingly.
