Talk is cheap of course, but he was quoted in the Echo about 2 weeks ago saying...

"Obviously, I want to be part of a team that has the chance to win the title, win major trophies and to play with the best players - but I expect that to happen here at Liverpool, and for the club to return itself to that level. I plan to stick with my contract."

Reina going would be a bigger loss than Torres, I'm struggling to think of another keeper I'd want in his place.

Reina (potentially), Mascherano, Torres, Xabi Alonso, Arbeloa....

        Going back further...Owen, McManaman....

Not trying to be funny, but the club needs to be asking itself why it has struggled to hold on to its top players in recent times more often than not when other clubs haven't appeared to have this problem. It feels like it can't just be a case of not enough success or "We're Liverpool, they don't get us" - it's happened/happening too often...

For me, if Reina were to leave, it would have to be for a sum of money that eclipses Buffon's record when he moved to Juventus and became the world's most expensive keeper - Pepé's on a 6-year contract, for feck's sake!

Not sure I could take him leaving us to play for Man Utd or Arsenal...I'd have to look at personally f**king football off indefinitely if that were the case...

          Would you really do that?

My brother has stated for quite a while that he thinks Man U will make a bid for Reina once van der Saar stated he was going to retire. This was from way before even the current season started. Could be right...

I think it’s just the lure of the champions league atm. There’s a Rafa interview up on the bbc where he talks about a Torres bid of 70 million at his peak- so I assume the season they finished second -he didn’t seem to want to leave then.

Sidenote: in the Rafa interview he makes it clear he’d like to return at some point.

Going forward I really like the new ethos for buying players. If they can hang on to Reina and make a few astute signings in the summer I don't see why they can't force their way back into the top four.

              Going back further...Owen, McManaman....
Those were both great deals for Liverpool. Owen had become disinterested in football and hasn‘t looked the same since. McManaman became a bench warmer for the rest of his career.

Not sure McManaman leaving for free was a great deal?

I must be thinking of Fowler - Liverpool got decent money for him, right? Main point is they didn?t exactly set the world on fire when they left.

Yeah, Fowler was a decent fee looking back.

McManaman left and scored in the Champions League Final win in his first season away. He did pretty well and is one of the only players who has left and gone on to what most people would probably say were better things after leaving LFC.

                      Yes, I would.

Reina turning his back on a 6-year contract with us to play for them would be the last straw.

Shouldn't you hate Andy Carroll then, seeing as he walked out on a five year deal at Newcastle (which he only signed in October) to join Liverpool, forgetting loyalty so he could join a club where he's more likely to get success?

Isn't that the same as if Reina left to go to Man Utd or Arsenal? I realise that the Man Utd rivalry would make it nastier if he went there, but surely it's basically the same thing?

Liverpool are 8th in the 2009-2010 World's 20 Richest clubs list.

Real are top, the Manc sh*te 3rd, and Arsenal and Chelsea 5th and 6th.

Real Madrid head the 2009-10 list of the richest football clubs in the world, while Manchester City climb from 20th to 11th place.

Slightly different, considering the Man Utd-Liverpool rivalry (which you mention), and the fact that the large majority of reports strongly suggest that Carroll was forced out of Newcastle.

Depends who you believe though, as Pardew said Carroll wanted a new contract to replace the one he'd signed a few months previously and then handed in a transfer request when they said no. Although I probably would be more inclined to believe Carroll, as Pardew answers to Mike Ashley, who doesn't exactly cover himself in glory with the way he conducts himself.

It works both ways... How many players and indeed managers have left Clubs they claimed to have loved, or singed long terms contracts to join rivals in the quest for top flight Football, success in the League or a chance to play in Europe ?; They was once a time people joined Liverpool, for such reasons.

It makes one sick, but you can hardly blame some of the players or Mangers
