He'd get something like 15mill if he was sacked wouldn't he? Would be a bit of a mug to agree to that. Especially if he's got a job already lined up.

Makes me wonder if this rumour was leaked to put pressure on him.

You'll all be pleased to know that Martin O'Neil is the current favourite with the bookies. Roy Hodgeson isn't too far behind as second favourite though.

Most of the reports are pushing the angle that the top players told the owners that they'd would leave if Benitez stayed, so at least if Benitez goes that suggests you should hold on to the likes of Gerrard and Torres.

I'd hate it if that were the case. If a player were to demand their manager is sacked or they leave, I'd like to think the club had some balls and would tell them to look for a new club.

Its stupid that players can wield those kinds of powers. I'd rather like to believe the idea that the club has seen an opportunity to off load Benitez to Inter, so rather than getting in the way by asking for a big compensation package they are offering him a way out quickly. That way they can then work on getting a new manager in to sort out the squad.

I agree, player power like that is a scary thing, just trying to look at a positive that could come out of it.

A curious thought occurred to me as I was perusing a Spurs forum. Robbie Keane is being linked to Aston Villa, so... if Martin O'Neil left Villa to go to Liverpool and kept up his interest in Keano...

I understand it's a joke, but Liverpool couldn't afford Robbie Keane now if he was on a free transfer, couldn't pay his wages.

For the moment, the manager isn't really *that* important.

One paper is reporting Mark Hughes as an option......

That'd be absolutely disgusting. Kenny Dalglish would be an interesting prospect, but he has been out of the game for so long. I'm not confident he has kept up to date with the changes in the long time he hasnt been managing.

I saw Kenny Dalglish a couple of weeks ago as I was getting on the train. Totally made my day just seeing him. I would be gutted if he took any role in the management of the team now, he is a legend who doesn't deserve to part of this ****estorm.

Most of the names being mentioned are frightening, I see Keegan's name is now also being thrown around.

I think we have to sink lower before we can go higher. Tough times ahead.

Indeed, I think the chances of Torres leaving have increased now, rather than decreased as some people seem to be suggesting.

And apparently any new manager will be a temporary appointment, no long term contracts will be offered.

                        And he's gone.

                        Absolutely gutted.

Yeah gutted here too. Even though I some times lost my rag with his decisions I'm kind of feeling it's a massive step backwards. One nightmare season and it's good night.

It simply HAS to be Roy Hodgson, of every other candidate mentioned so far he is the only person I would entrust with running the club as it is right now.

He is exceptional at getting the best out of his players, as he has proved but the way Fulham have been performing under him.

Its a real shame, imo, that Benitez has gone. Sell Torres and Gerrard, get £80mil and then rebuild with that.

is it all about finishing 7th last year though.

I wonder if potential buyers had expressed a desire that him and his backroom staff were sorted and removed before they come in.

Dalglish & Rush is an interim measure until a new buyer is found and in and they can bring in their own person.

This isn't purely a footy decision to my mind, though he does deserve the sack alone for that in my eyes.

Kinda contradicting yourself there. Hodgson is great at getting the best out of players, instead of selling our best two we should be keeping them and letting Hodgson do his magic with the rest of the squad. We do NOT have bad players at all, I just think Benitez struggled to get the best out of them. Who's to say he wouldn't be able to get Babel to live up to his potential for example? A manager can sometimes transform a player, just look what Redknapp has done at Spurs with Bale and Lennon among others.
