Obviously vastly experienced, has a good record at lifting mediocre teams (should be ideal for England then), has international experience including at major competitions, was a UEFA scout for 16 years and thus extremely familiar with most of Europe's lesser-known players.

Give the guy a chance. We don't know that Redknapp would necessarily have been a better choice. And quite frankly, given everyone and their goat was being xenophobia and insisting on an English manager (a foreign manager wouldn't have the desire? Really?) and thus already limiting their selections, Hodgson is as experienced as they come.
Harry can handle big players which is something i believe is a prerequisite of the england job...and roy didnt manage it at liverpool.

Harry just seems to be liked by the players a great deal, and if you arrive already with the players truly on side, then you are off to a flyer.

Having said all this though, i do still believe roy will do better than capello, i mean he is english for a start.

He just worries me because his football style isnt something that will necissarily improve englands chances.

    We'll see.

Its these so called big players that's part of the trouble with England, such a shame these players never seem to put in a BIG performance when it really mattered and that in the finals... Maybe this is what England needs and a Manager that isn't so friendly with these so called BIG players and isn't scared to put in new blood.

I don't get the hate with Roy too, what he done in the likes of Football with WBA and Fullham is one of the hardest things to do in Management and where some of the so called best managers would have a hard time with out their millions and millions to spend very easy to do well when you got millions to spend , different story when you havent' which is why I have such a high opinion of the likes of Brendan Rodgers, Roy, and more so David Moyes (I love to some of the so called best Managers operate under the same budget Moyes has too each season). It didn't work out at Liverpool ofr Roy but they again he was never given over a hundred million to spend and there is always a Club that it never works out for with any Manager (Harry and Southampton never worked out )

I just think the sooner the English wake up to the fact they have a average side, the better

Not sure if it has already been metioned but I am too lazy to go back and read every post. Graham Taylor was saying on the radio the other night that Roy will do a lot more of the behind the scenes work that Harry wouldn't do. I think he was saying that Roy will help with overall infrastructure and work at National Football Centre. I reckon Harry would just watch a few games and pick the team to be honest. The more I think about it the happier I am about Roy getting the job. I don't think the Liverpool job is a real issue as who has done a decent a job there in the last few years?

I agree about his time at Liverpool not mattering a huge amount. Most managers will have at least one job in their past that didn't go well, so it's not a good enough reason to discount someone from the job. Also, if doing poorly at Liverpool discounts Roy, why not discount Harry for taking Southampton down?

I'm glad Roy got the job as I think it should go to and English manager (not for patriotic reasons, I just think it's logical that if you're only allowed to use players from your own country the same should apply to the manager) and I wanted Harry to stay at Spurs.

So, what do people think about the Neville appointment? Personally, I think it is an intelligent signing. I know Neville has his haters but I have always liked him. He knows the game, impressed me as a pundit, isn't afraid to speak his mind and has won just about it all as a player.

I think it sounds sensible. As a pundit he's "un..be..lieve...able!", well I found him to be really informative. He's experienced in both playing and winning. Just come back as a pundit in one piece. All those good words from a Liverpudlian too

Was hoping the he may get in FIFA13...

Agree with those sentiments, even though I like United I always thought Neville was a snidey character, but he's young, only recently retired and is familiar with the England set up so can only be positive I think.

On the other hand I think his brother is sound of character and would seem a more level headed choice, though obv still performing reasonably well at club level.

                      Same old same old.

Do you think there's some guy at the FA who's picked all the England squads for the last ten years (all one of them) and they just wheel a manager out who'll pretend they're doing it? At least three of those standbys should be in the squad. Gerrard and Lampard! That can't possibly go wrong!

I think that its picked via committee. I mean Milner is a solid player but really?! And Gerrard - is he really worth another shot?
Hopefully after the euro's hodgson will pick an actual new squad.

I can feel the excitement growing within me after seeing that squad list...

I thought we were going to miss out on rambling nonsense when Harry didn't get the job, but Roy is giving it a go! He said he was impressed with how well Oxlade-Chamberlain did against Milan, especially up against Ambrosini and Pirlo. That would be the Ambrosini who was suspended and the Pirlo who moved to Juventus.

It's the forwards that actually worry me most.

Carroll is not proven at this level, Defoe is coming off the back of a season where he didn't even seem to play much (though admittedly he still somehow managed to be one of the top scorers at his club so maybe I'm wrong), Rooney will be suspended at first and Wellbeck is talented but pretty hit and miss in regards to what kind of performance he puts in during any given game...

Quite possibly the worst excuse for an England front line ever.

I can't see us scoring many either, that said I am pleased to see Defoe been given a chance. Also pleased to Chamberlain get a run. The experience will do him good.
