I only went with Upson for something approaching recent experience in the England first team

But based on club form who would you have picked?

        Michael Turner!

Truth is Fami, people will believe we are biased, but my two centre backs on form right now for England would be Terry and Cahill, however, as I say, the truth is that he's behind Upson, Lescott and if he were fit, probably Jagielka as well, despite being a better player than all of them.

You can't get "experience in the England team" if you ever get a game. Terry had to get his first cap some time.

If you want a replacement for Rio, it's Gary Cahill.

Maybe, but generally not in competitive fixtures, and certainly not in defence in competitive fixtures. Cahill might be the better choice on paper, but Scott Carson was the better choice on paper two years ago and that didn't turn out great. Cahill needs some friendlies

Agreed, but if you look at the last few England games, Cole was terrible yesterday, as was Rio and Lescott hasn't exactly justified his price tag.

Personally if I was Capello, I'd have used these two qualifiers to give some fringe players a game and see how they got on.

I'd rather give them a chance in a qualifier, than some meaningless friendly as you're going to get a better look at them. A game against someone like the Ukraine is always gonna be a bigger test than some friendly against Malta or Luxembourg.

Maybe he will in the next game. We've got nothing to play for now the unbeaten record is gone, and it would've been unfair (though hilarious) on Croatia to experiment in the game against the Ukraine.

The guy is playing every week in the premier league in a team that isn't a "Man Utd" or a "Man City", ie, not a team that just attack attack attack, he's been the outstanding player in our team for over a season now, and pops up with important goals (with his head and his feet).

If Lescott is worth what City paid for him, then Cahill must be worth ?50 million. He's just such a better player. Lescott only gets the plaudits he does because he scores quite a few goals for a defender. His positioning and mental awareness is absolutely awful, end up using him at a world cup and we'll get battered.

I think you're gonna have your work cut out holding on to Cahill in January / next summer. I can see teams in the Tottenham, Everton, etc., bracket testing Bolton's resolve to hold on to him with a hefty bid or two.

Not England related but it is world cup related: did anyone see the Argentina vs Peru match last night? Caught the start just before going to bed and ended up watching the whole thing, the end of the match was amazing.

There was a storm that was rocking the camera all over the shop, you could hardly see because of the rain on the camera, Peru got a last minute equaliser, Argentina go back ahead in injury time, then Peru hit the bar with a halfway line shot straight from the restart! A real shame it didn't go in. I'm definitely going to be watching Uruguay vs Argentina, hoping for another crazy match.

Yeah. I was pub sitting, so it was just me and the mrs in the bar, beer and snacks on tap and the game.

Absolutely unbelievable!! I was trying to explain to the mrs about how the South American qualifiers are always more exciting and I think that match showed why.

Dream comeback for Palermo as well. You do have to question Maradonna's decsions though. And where was the real Messi in that game?

I was resigned to losing him last year. I thought this would be his last season. That said, he's on record as saying "Under Capello, you don't have to play for a big four team to get called up" and he's proven right.

Also, he came to us from Villa because he wanted to play every game, he might get that at Chelsea (though they can't buy!) but Liverpool and Arsenal don't like English players that much, the only club I can see him going to is Man Utd.

I wouldn't begrudge him at all, he's far too good for us. But he won't go to Everton or Spurs.

Gerrard is out for the next game with another groin strain.

                            Dull game tonight.
The thing that amazes me is that players like Lennon cannot seem to get a decent ball into the box. Lennon has pace and is able to beat most defenders, but then he just seems to fall over and put a half-hearted pass into the box.
It's the same with the free kicks, we must have had 3 free kicks in decent posistions, and we only once did we make the keeper make a save. Beckhams place must just about be nailed at the moment.

I'm surprised he's allowed to take free kicks!

The final ball has always been Lennon's biggest weakness. He's got lots better at this, this season but It's still hit and miss.

I remember Nicky Summerbee didn't even have to beat a man, he just stayed on the flank, received the ball, and could bend a perfect cross around the defender.

There's very few proper wingers any more, who can fire in a good cross.
