At least one newspaper this morning says the stadium naming rights thing is being looked at by the fairplay chaps.

From what I've read it seems to be a deal to sponsor not only the stadium, but all the future developments in the area surrounding the stadium too (so you'll end up with the Eithad Hotel, Etihad Casino, etc). I suppose that's how they're hoping to get around the fair play rules; it's not just for the stadium so it isn't overpriced.
UEFA could have made it harder by simply saying that you're not allowed to receive sponsorship from companies that have an obvious, direct connection to the people who own the football club.
Originally posted by abigsmurf View PostIt's next to impossible to reliably enforce that though.
A good example: executive boxes at a football ground. Who's to say you couldn't charge someone ?1million+ for them a season.
It would hard to be able to prove that something isn't just expensive rather than actually cooking the books.
You're right that it's probably going to be too hard to enforce though. There are going to be so many grey areas, threat of legal action from clubs, etc., that I can see UEFA giving up in the end.

Thats interesting, I hadn't picked up it was naming rights for the surround too. Swiss Ramble a while back highlighted that a stadium side development for City would be closely enough linked to the club that its income would be considered as 'football income' and thus could be used to support their high spending under FFP.

The Premier League have changed the rule relating to fielding "weakened teams". Teams can now field whatever starting eleven they like from their twenty-five man squad. The PL will only get involved if they feel a team had picked too many youth players from outside the twenty-five man squad.
Sensible move in my view, I'm of the opinion managers should be able to use their twenty-five man squad however they see fit (also I disliked the hypocrisy of rich clubs not being sanctioned for doing the exact same thing simply because they can afford a better quality of reserve player). I know there are a lot of differing views on this subject though!

It's not as bad with a 25 man squad because most teams have a reasonable amount of quality throughout.
However if a manager fields a side he knows to be almost entirely players he'd never consider for a competative game as a couple of teams with a narrower spread of quality in their squad have... I dislike that intensely. Games where a side literally doesn't turn up are an insult to fans.

The Geordie Nation! Toon Army - founded 1992.
Their crowds were ****e prior to Keygun Mk1. Just over 20K in the late eighties, hitting a huge dip prior to Keegan.
Then, Hallelujah! The Toon Army were born, Britain's loyalist 'world-owes-us-a-living' fans. The Plastic Mags. The Great Myth.
Real Mags - whether they still attend of not - remember the ****e days and cringe at the BOYCOUTTers and the type of incident that happened at Darlo. They remember almost going down to Division Three in the early 90s. The club still has the hardcore of high-and-low attenders, and many realistic fans who don't go to games anymore - these are decent people. The Plastic Toon Army only know the Keegan era onwards, and think they should have success and grandeur on a plate. Granted, they played some fantastic football in the mid 90s, but they won nowt. That era was a positive blip in their history.
