Originally posted by merf View Posti have been critical of O'Neil several times on here, a legend in his own ego who has achieved very little of note as a manager and seriously under performed at Villa who supported him with the money he always whined he wanted.
he can now slip back to a mediocre small side with less budget where he can snipe from the sidelines about how poor he is and can't complete.
your time is up mate, you got found out and quit before another poor season with a squad you assembled at huge cost.
Also you can look down at small sides. But I tell you what, half of the so called Top Premiership manager's wouldn't last 5 min's, if they had to work on tiny Budgets and continually sell players to balance the books

The Transfer League lists all players and their transfer fees for English premier league and Championship football clubs. Italso has information on squad costs per season, club payments to Agents and Premier league club finances.
Outside the silly spending clubs this shows how well he's been backed.

That table shows that he's spent less money per season than Pop Up Pirate, a load of Chelsea and Citeh boys, and around the same as a couple of Spuz failures.
Yet Villa, after the O'Leary shambles, have finished 6th three times and reached a cup final. It's not that bad - other teams spending tons of cash have failed to break the top 4 too. I will agree, though, that last season Villa were poor in the league considering the outlay of the previous summer.
Shocked at how balanced MagBoss's spending is! Not shocked to see how terrible Keane was. No wonder they're reigning in the buying.

And what he did at Leicester was simply incredible imo

its a lot of money when you consider the financial nature of Villa, who are way down on income compared to the other sides.
I'm not ignoring the Man City or Chelsea managers who've spent fortunes but they are being bankrolled as billionaires playthings. the most shocking on the list was Roy Keane, Benitez spent a fortune but at least the cloob had CL money to actually spend until this year.
O'Neil was effectively being bankrolled as a CL bet and he was spending at that level but never attained it, and like many managers find if it doesn't come things start to turn and if he hadn't jumped I think they'd have struggled to match their last few seasons.
Of all his teams I'll concede he did best at Leicester but it was a short blip of success and he saw it couldn't be sustained so bolted. Winning the scottish league at Celtic really doesn't count for much and then we are left with his Villa credentials, which for me against the money he's spent are very poor.
hes another media darling manager.

Hmm, was shocked at just how poor Chelsea were in the Charity Shield. Terry and Cole in particular looked like shadows of themselves and while its far to early to make any judgement, Chelsea are looking an old team, especially after their pre-season debacle.
Man United i still feel need a creative midfielder and a proven striker, though Hernandez looks like he could be a real threat with his pace and movement. Berba, regardless of his sublime finish still doesn't convince me he can make a difference for United over a season.
My top 6 are:
1: Man United
2: Chelsea
3: Arsenal
4: Liverpool
5: City
6: Spurs

To me Villa really lack a 20 to 30 goal a year striker, if they could well have finished inthe top 4 last season

Also while the Scottish league isn't quite the same, at least Celtic were half decent in Europe, and this after the mes John Barnes and Kenny Dalglish left the Club in . I'll not say he's the best and real deal . But he's one of the top managers and like the likes of David Moyes doing a real good job

More super injunction BS. No doubt the press will over time give out enough hints to make it utterly meaningless and they can attempt to destroy someone else's life and make it a living hell for their family just to sell a few extra papers.
They've already said it's an England footballer with two kids which must eliminate at least 3/4 of the squad.

Typically **** day at the Stadium of ****e.
- Mensah out for 3 weeks. Shock.
- No-one wants Ferdinand, which means less money in the kitty. (Pfft - more on that later)
- SSN reporting that Chubby Bruce has no interest in Insomnia. If true, then it's indicative of...
- Strange goings on behind the scenes, with not just a tightening of the purse strings this summer, but a sizeable profit on ins and outs. Nothing wrong with making a bit in the market and spending wisely, but you have to wonder what the club's direction is. Several names have gone by the wayside which would have strengthened the team hugely. There's at least 15 million come in, with piss-all spent. This 'spend FA' scenario is further evidenced by having 3 loan signings. I always understood that the transfer policy of the club is to make funds available when a sensible target is identified to improve the team at a fair price. This summer we've lost our 2nd top scorer and captain to other clubs, and goalie to injury, with glaring holes elsewhere in the team (left back, attacking midfield player) not being filled. What's more, this all seems to be a calculated strategy. Ferguson only let Welbeck come here if was guaranteed games. As soon as Jones was out of the door, Welbeck arrived. Bruce clearly doesn't intend to replace Jones. Same way he doesn't want to sign a left back, after shoehorning Richardson into that position and insisting that he's great there. We're a selling club playing Victorian Governess to other teams' kids. With a manager who maybe can't control, as evidenced by ...
- Bruce inviting Howard Webb up to lecture the team on discipline. Howard Bloody Webb. I'm not saying that it's a bad idea per se, but when a huge chunk of our yellows from last year was due to dissent, and making a hotheaded chunderbus Captain, who picks up a yellow for dissent first game, well, then you've made a bed for your own turds then, haven't you? Webb's visit is like pulling your pants down after you've already had your ****.
What do you think of all that, Jebus?Last edited by prinnysquad; 19-08-2010, 23:01.
