Cheers, that actually does looks pretty cool since I can see that the writing is in English on it (couldn't tell from the pics on PA and thought it might be plastered with Korean)

      I'm going to get it

Synopsis / biographies, original flyers etc for each game. All in Japanese though, or Korean in the case of that Special Edition.

So. Even in 60hZ mode Bubble Bobble on the PAL Taito Legends disc runs slow and with glitches?

                Oh my.

Just wondering. Bubble Bobble on the PSX - is that a better conversion than what's being offered in this new compilation?

I'm still dissapointed with this. All this talk of 50p per game, some being worth 20 quid in their own right etc. I agree with in isolation, but it is beside the point. What I object to is being sold a product that claims to do one thing (play a load of old arcade games from Taito as they were in the arcades) and doesn't. It is, in effect, broken. I cannot believe what I have just read about Bubble Bobble - that is in excusable too.

I too am also surprised that there is no lightgun support - but at least they never claimed there was.

It seems that we have bog all rights to do anything about it either.

From now on I'll be buying all my retro collections from Japan. I would have this one, but I really only wanted Continental Circus. Waaaaaaa!

If Rainbow Islands isn't arcade perfect in this compilation then I'll stick to MAME. I've still got the brilliant Amiga version in the loft, but no Amiga to run it on though.
There was a PC engine version I saw and should of bought! damned Hindsight!

Also noticed play.com are doing this title for ?9.99! 34p a game! lower! lower!

Also EVERYTHING gamewise gets a better release in Japan - why the suprise this time!?!

I haven't read the previous pages but I just wanted to quickly bitch that Taito Legends (which I bought) has the original Elevator Action and not Returns, but Taito Memories 1 does have it, and all the other stuff I wanted. But then those bastards left New Zealand Story to Memories 2. So I either have to buy TM 1 or sell TL and buy TM 1 and 2. Sigh. Bastards. Rastan is awesome (and rock hard like I remember)

Not true. Astroboy GBA was improved for the western release.

And then there's ....um. Okay. Maybe that's the exception that proves the rule

EU Ico had improved AI, the lightsaber and subtitles.

Then there's the international versions of FF

I hope I ain't left it too late for my 2 cents...

I just ran out and purchased my copy of this as soon as I could, fired it up, and instantly thought 'Bubble Bobble' was off...!

The music was wrong, this fact being made particularily clear by the 'proper' music being played in the background during the 'global options' from the main menu...

However I soon solved this by choosing the 60hz option when turn the game on. Hey presto - in game music was back like how it should.

This then reminded me of something from my days as a young kid fiddling around with ZX Spectrum machine code. Back in those days, certain programming tasks could well be accomplished by taking their timing from the length of time it took for the processor to process a chunk of instructions... where as other tasks would take their timing by sync-ing to the display refresh rate which in the UK was always 50hz.

Because one cannot be sure exactly how a piece of software was written, changing either of those two variables (processor speed & refresh rate) could well have wildly varying results, from the obvious change in game play speed, to any number of random weird effects.

In this instance, although (to me) "Bubble Bobble" played the same in 50hz compared to 60hz, it certainly was the case that the slower refresh rate definitely affected the music, and who knows, that 17% margin of difference could very well have had the knock on effect of fundamentally altering the movement of bubbles...
...and who-knows how many other factors of the game!

This same principle could well apply to many of the other games in the package, in that the change in refresh rate may not just affect the play speed of the game (or even at all) but rather instead fundamentally alter crucial aspects of the gameplay. Unfortunately I am no 'zen' master at many of these games, having only sparingly encountered any of them in the arcades in real life, so I personally am certainly unable to confirm/deny any kind of gameplay differences there might be.

As for slow down, well the processor speed in the PS2 isn't that high really - what - 296mhz or something? And what with dodgy emulation programs that have been rendered in 'C' rather than native 'x86'/'emotion engine' machine code (which is what it really should be, in my opinion) then no doubt slow-down is going to continue to rear its ugly head, inspite of having faster & more powerful processors.

                              - - - - - -
                              And finally... (!)
I assume that owning a copy of "Taito Legends" actually now entitles me to Legally play those games on M.A.M.E., right? Anyone like to assert/refute my assumption there?

Yup, it works! I just tried this out on my Xbox version, and lo and behold - the sound's fixed! The games run a little faster as well. Now Bubble Bobble sounds and plays just like it should. Rainbow Islands does too. (minus the original melody, of course)

                                I'm well chuffed now.
