Done most of another chapter in Veteran, but I can't be assed any more. CoD2 was fine in Veteran, but this is a bag of piss. ****y enemies shooting through concrete walls is just taking the piss.

I've been shot from behind when I've already cleared and come from that direction. My best friend and I call it "Xbox magic" and a lot of games have these "magic" moments.

Ok, had another play around with this last night and I found a route over the final part of chapter 8 vet that makes the whole thing a lot more doable (assuming you still have about 10 sniper bullets left, which I did). It's easy enough that you don't really even have to crouch.

If anybody gets stuck there let me know and I can type up a rough guide.

Chapter 8 is The Forest right? I didn't find that level too difficult but the next one is taking much longer. I'm up to the part where you go through the gate up to the house and out the back but keep finding a head that I can't shoot despite being able to see him clearly.

The part with the Flak88 guns was frustrating too >.<

Yeah chapter 8 is the forest. From what I experienced the difficulty level really depends on the route - and unlike most other (previous) levels there is such limited visibility that picking out a sensible route is a bit down to luck.

Was really loving this online last night. Lost in every match that I played, but was getting so involved it didn't really matter!

Played this a bit last week. I enjoyed the online stuff. But in single player for all its pyrotechnics and noise its distinctly uninvolving. And its got some truly awful bullet collision detection.

The online is potentially great. Shame about it being nigh-on impossible to get into ranked matches which are the only way to unlock online achievements. It's a bit disgraceful.

For those who are stuck on The Forest 'crossing the road' section on Veteran:

Once you have passed that situation, the game is reasonably easy from there on as The Forest chapter is the only hurdle on Veteran mode.

I assume you have already noticed that there isn't a checkpoint from where you start near the hut, over the road, up the hill, down the trench, through the mortar path and even when you man the mortar itself. It is a frustrating experience.

When your soldiers start to throw the smoke grenades, leg it down behind the tank and take out the first group in the trenches just across the road by ducking out and shoot with the long sighted weapon.

Once that is done, you can see that there are at least half a dozen rocks as you work your way up the hill. Use them to duck and pop up to shoot the enemies in the distance and after a while, your soldiers will start to move up the hill thus the enemies retreat back and is a good opportunity to move onto the next rock for cover.

Just rinse and repeat the duck and cover method until you get near the trench where the hut is for you to use up some of your grenades and let your soldiers do some of their work as well as you taking out the last remaining few left.

You will then proceed down into the hut and just use your machine gun or whatever automatic weapon you have to finish off those that are in the mortar trench but do be careful not to kill your fellow soldiers.

Next, just throw all the smoke grenades (if you have any) down near the blockage and go from right to left as the enemy line of fire is worse on the left hand side so do the hardest one first.

If you start to get hurt badly get off the mortar and crouch to the floor and pop up again but you have to be aware that the German soldiers resprawn so if there is any right in front of you, be careful and take them out by ducking and shooting before getting back on the mortar.

It is by far the hardest part of the game so once that is done, give yourself a pat on the back and enjoy the rather easy ride to the finish line.

Seems so, chapter 9 was a relative breeze. I recognize the point somebody else mentioned though - near the third AA gun there's a guy with a very visible head that you can't shoot! Annoying, but it's simple to go back to the second emplacement and snipe him across the map.

A refinement on your forest guide:
Once you've sniped the 5 guys in the trench, make your way across the road at the left side and up the hill to the rock there. You'll meet some people coming down but they're all AI=Off enemies.
Now snipe over the left side of the rock (you can stand). There should be somebody hiding there who gets replaced 3-4 times. Between shots check for more of those guys running towards you, but they should stop that after a short while.
Once you have cleared out the left side of the map, your comrades should advance forward. There may be one or two enemies hiding so have a quick look out the right side of the rock, but generally it's all clear.
Follow their advance up the right side: to the tree your guy hides behind, then to the next rock. Again, take out the 3-4 people hiding up the left side, after which you should only have a few left in the bunker itself.
Take out the right door first then inside, then, rather that trying to take out the mortar emplacement directly, back up and go outside: you can shoot / grenade over the wall with little danger. Then do the mortar bit...

I find that this approach is extremely low risk, compared with either the trench -> right hand side or smoke + middle boulder alternatives. As I said earlier, you can do the method above without even crouching: taking out 5 guys from the left of that boulder is sufficient to trigger the advance.

So, my initial question was what do I need to do at the mortar bit ? How do I know when I've cleared the path ? Cos I seem to be stuck in that trench with the mortar gun - I've fired off ****loads of shots but eventually the little ****s get on top of me and I'll pop up to re-man it and get me head blown off....

Is that the end of the level if you successfully clear the blockade ?

                        Comment

Yes, clear out the last few guys running at you, jump over the wall, and that's the end of the level*. You have to mortar everything off the road - you'll know when you hit something as it'll explode. If they're not exploding you're not hitting them. Rotate the right stick to change angle.
I also found it useful to mortar the road in front of the blockage as that's where the enemy gathers before storming the hill - take them out there to stop getting overwhelmed.

                          * Or maybe there's a carpark you have to clear - I'm a bit blurry on which level that is - but at least when you've done the mortar you'll get a checkpoint.

Yes, but the game stupidly doesn't tell you that you need to revolve the right stick in order to change the elevation. Otherwise your mortars just go beynd the blockade and do jack **** (although they look like they might be doing something).

This is one of the worst designed sections in what is the worst designed game I've played for a good few years now. Not only does it fail to give you complete instructions, it places you back before the hardest part of the game when you **** it up (through no fault of your own).

Absolute garbage. Thank **** I finished the game on hard and will never have to return to it. That veteran achievement can munch my freshly laid turd, I'll be bollocked if I'm going back to that fetid **** pile of a single player game any time soon.

Thank the Lord - NOW I understand why the thing wasn't ****ing working - I was blasting them mortars off left/right/centre and couldn't suss what was going on.

Cheers Brats - One more chance for this bastard. COD2 was SO much better in SP.....

I took a chance on this on Sunday, played it for about an hour and realised that i simply wasnt enjoying myself.

I felt like i'd done it all before in COD 2 and i just didnt have the enthusiasm.

An hour after buying it I go back to blockbuster and ask to exchange it for FEAR.

Much better game in my opinion.
