i've managed to get around the skybox problem finally by turning the anti aliasing options in Nvidia Control Panel to Application controlled, looks sweet now, performance has taken a bit of a hit as to be expected, roll on the patch.
Really enjoying the game thus far just been doing random sidequests, the atmosphere is awesome.

Concept, you'd probably be all over this, by the way - what with the Manhunt article and all. Seriously, that's not sarcasm; I agree, the atmosphere is utterly, utterly stunning. Take Half-Life 2's crumbling Eastern Bloc look and ramp it up to eleven; sure, the XRay engine isn't that great compared to the big guns (Kotatsu would probably hate this), but the colour palette and the texture work and the skies and the wind howling and the slight washes of ambient music and just the weight of the emptiness everywhere and... oh, Jesus, I haven't been so freaked out by a videogame in years.
If you hadn't already said you couldn't stand anything less than a rock-solid 60fps I would have said go for it; I'm running it on an ancient PC but even though I'm down at DX8 in 800x600 at (mostly) full detail I still think it's gorgeous, last-gen or otherwise. Absolutely phenomenal. Yes, it's full of bugs. Yes, it badly needs patching (though it is still perfectly playable). But for anyone who can't see past the faults - I mean, Christ, you must not have a soul or something.

Cheers for the write-up. You're making me even more hungrier to play it, I just don't want to do it with the game spluttering as though its on its last legs. That's why I'm kind of hoping THQ will try and recoup some of the development funding costs by making it multiplatform, though I'm not sure how much role GSC have in determining that decision. But yeah, I'm jealous of you all right now, as it seems as though it's the kind of game I'd generally fall for. I'm generally tired of the usual staple of first person shooters.
Edit: Ah, screw it. You know what, I'll pick the game up on Monday and see how it runs. I'm in need of something that feels completely fresh.
