    wassisden?

PCWorld helps you navigate the PC ecosystem to find the products you want and the advice you need to get the job done.

Sega confirmed that the developers developed the game natively on the PlayStation 3, later porting it to the Xbox 360, PC, and PSP.

Exactly. This is pretty much frame rate 101 but what the heck-

HDTVs are 60fps. You either update every frame and get 60fps, or you update ever 2nd frame and get 30fps. Every third frame is 20fps.

To get any other frame rate you either update eratically, ie. update frame 1,2,4,5,7,9,10 etc, skipping where you have to. This will give a very messy and ugly display. Or you can turn the vsync off, which results in partially drawn frames being displayed. (or tearing as people often call it)

Sega Rally is vsynced and updates every 2nd frame, giving 30fps.

Been playing the two tracks for the past 2 and a half hours, i'm really enjoying it. Looks nice and if I wasn't told it was 30 fps, I would have happily believed otherwise.

They've got the handling bang on imo, they've got the announcer and they even got in the "GAME OVER YEAAAH!" guy screaming at the end of the demo.

Both of the tracks available are fun. Plenty of nice corners as well as plenty of wide cheeky places where you can overtake the opposition around them too, oh and on the Tropical track a very similarish layout of jumps to the first track in SR1. The hair pin on the Canyon level reminds me so much of a track on RSC2, so satisying getting around it full speed and then bombing it down the hill to a medium right. Really nice course, lots of variation.

Out of the two, the Canyon is my favourite to race so far but the Tropical track has more use of the track deformation feature. Soon as you start you can feel the difference of driving in tracks already dug in the sand, as opposed to trying to drive on fresh sand. It's definatly better to drive in the tracks then going over and against them, the rumble seems to react to every groove and track you drive over as well as making the car handle off a bit.

By the 3rd lap both tracks are pretty churned up so it's best to go for the line which has been carved out for you. I've not really noticed that much of an acceleration boost in taking these lines, although I suppose extended play and Time Trials will highlight that. I still think that on certain turns it probably better to slide out of the path carved for you, especially in overtaking other cars.

Started off with Manual Gears first, although I'm not really comfortable with the default layout. Stuck with Automatic and managed to control the car pretty well and nicely around the track, just sliding in or slowing down before a harsh corner or hairpin. I love how theres some sections of both courses which you don't have to use the brake and you cans smoothly slide and power up to the next set of corners.

Really looking forward to the full release, think I will be getting this instead of PGR4 for my racing kicks. Don't really get on with "Sim" games, atleast with this bumping and blocking will be all part of the fun!

the demo doesn't match the quality of the final game. weak sound fx and also the handling doesn't feel right compared to what i've played at the Leipzig GC. i go for the road setup and only use the handbrake in very tight turns but i find it ridiculously difficult to get into good drift without losing too much speed.

Yeah but SKU actually means Stock Keeping Unit, and it's actually quite a wierd word to use in reference to such things. People only started using it when MS did, and not many people really understand what it means.

Anyway getting back to Sega Rally, my mind is divided on this game, it really is. I just fired up the demo again, and I really do enjoy playing it. It's a real fun arcade racer, nice smooth framerate (it's not 60, but it's sure higher than 30, and it's consistant), and well, it's fun. I found myself replaying the demo quite a few times.

On the other hand, it ain't Sega Rally. If this game was released by Sega under a different brand, it would get less critisism. As it is, it (quite rightly) has to live up to it's predecessors, and that's where it falls down.

Anyone put off by the negative comments should at least give it a try, because it's by no means a bad game. Just not one really deserving of the Sega Rally branding, and that will damage even my own view of this title.

Give us Sega Race TV please, that looks like the best thing in years.

Can't believe the negativity surrounding this, I had more fun in the 5 or 6 races on this then I did the entire time I played Dirt. The handling feels suitably arcadey to me and the track deformation is way beyond that of Motorstorm. Graphically it's nothing special but it gets the job done and people gibberin incessantly about frame rates really need to f off tbh, the game runs as smooth as it needs to,at no point did it ever cause a problem for me while playing it.

Seems that anything less than a carbon copy of Sega Rally on Saturn was unacceptable for some of you alough I suspect that most haven't played it in years if you think it's way beyond this.

The music is pretty ****e though.

I like this, looks nice and it's smooth, even though it isn't 60 FPS it doesn't feel as slow as 30. It's hard though, what difficulty is the AI set as? Remember Virtua Tennis 3 demo was set to hard...

    Awful, awful soundtrack.

    OT again but
Well it has AA for one for two rumble does not matter at all to me, as for achievements I hate them with a passion they are pointless busy work imoh.
I like the PS3 pad on Dirt as for friends I have more on my PS3 atm

Unless the PS3 version is 60fps, what possible advantage could you get? You loose rumble, achievements, anti-aliasing, friends and presence... Plus the PS pad has never been up to much for analogue or trigger control.
