I've just tried the demo and I have to agree with everyone who has said it was excellent. Very hard to find fault with. It looks amazing and is really good fun. My only gripe was that the cut scenes were a bit jerky, but apparently they are a lot smoother in the full game.

Downloaded from EU store at weekend for the weeman - Is it just me or is PSN getting slower ?
Graphically it's nice enough but it's not OMFG best thing ever or anywhere near that. What concerned me was I can see where Nige came from with the Sonic comparisons though this is a much better package - The on-rails sections in particular and the (seemed very brief) "open" parts of the levels.
There was a map but I can't for the life of me work out why - it was entirely linear from start to end and for the most part (i.e the rails sections and the vert lifts) they could've used CGI for the backgrounds and it'd make no odds - it plays out the same every time (ie building collapsing) - It's like Motorstorm for me in that respect - there's not as much going on or anywhere near the level of emergence you think - most of it is just heavily scripted stuff. For example why don't the enemies interact with objects in the world bashing them about and stuff with realistic physics ?
Good but nothing great - and I see nothing which sets it apart from it's PS2 forebearers - other than better graphics what's different between it and the last ones ?
Anyway, the weeman enjoyed it but if Mario Galaxy is out before this in the UK it hasn't got a chance of getting attention from me or him.
One thing else was he asked what the robot (Clank ?) was for or what he did - Is he controllable or does he have a purpose ?
Great cutscenes btw - and they weren't stuttery or anything on my machine though slighly higher res wouldn't have hurt.

The map serves no purpose in what is a very limited demo. In the full game each level can have multiple missions and due to the size of the full levels you really need the map tp get you around. Bear in mind that the full levels are vast when compared to the demo and you can fly around some of them.
Clank
does get his own areas in the full game and get's his own skills such as being able to slow down time and control aliens.
He's needed in the game as the propellers and wings are a part of his body.
As much as I enjoyed the demo it is poor when conmpared to the game in almos every way but if you didn't like the demo then you probably won't like the game.

Well see you've now alluded to it being a lot more open and freeform than the demo implies - perhaps that's because I never played the old ones so could only go on this demo but at times I was thinking "pandemonium" which I used to play to pass time on my n-gage when taking a dump at work (so not the best thing to be compared to).
The idea of vast levels with missions involving going to different places sounds much better - when's it out here then ?

It's not like Pandemonium...which I thought was a really good game anyway!
I can't really remember the size of the first planet though so I'm not sure how that map would have represented the later game.
I've played about 4 or 5 planets now and
you get to fly from planet to planet later on in something akin to an on rails StarFox type thing.
I was really not looking forward to that part but I find it works really well after a couple of goes.
The demo was pretty much A to B type gaming which is a little misleading really.
I seem to remember that there was a couple of gliding sections around that city later but they were controlled as it was your first go, you just had to follow somebody.
It's worth reading so reviews of the game and I'm going to put some stuff in the 1st play thread today or tomorrow.
I did play couple of the older games and did enjoy them but no as much as I'm enjoying this one. You can tell that the people who know exactly what they are doing with this type of game and everything seems to be crafted to just work exactly as it should.
Also, there is some really imaginitive platforming bits later on
where you get hold of a jelly gun which you can use to shot jelly blobs which bounce you really high. It's good on lan but even better tryin to do it on fast flowing liquids lol.
