My friend had to make a new user account a while ago for his games so they couldnt detect burning programs etc. That was on XP though so I'm not sure if the same trick would work in vista.

Getting used to the controls and starting to enjoy this more. The setpieces and puzzles are enjoyable and the story's still pretty intriguing, voice acting's not too bad either. It's still such a pity though that you have to 'get used' to the controls rather than them being perfect from the start.

I dont know one game where I havent had to 'get used' to the controls.
Seriously though with some of the descriptions on here I was expecting to be in pain.
Took me no more than about 5mins to get used to them.
So far so good for me, it's what I expected it to be gameplay wise even the
taxi chase to central park
was cool and I thought those scenes were gonna be crap.
It's been nothing but tense so far nice, some cool scripted scenes nicely accompanied by a really cinematic musical score, gets you going at times.
We shall see how far it takes for my opinion to change, if it will but so far so good.

There's a difference though in 'getting used' to them from learning what the buttons do compared to learning the quirks of the controls to actually control the character, since he controls like a tank a lot of times. There's also when you are surrounded by baddies and need to go into your jacket to make bombs, weapons etc. It's just not intuitive enough and a bit fiddly, though it's not too bad now.
Onto episode 6 of this now, stuck on a puzzle though I think I worked it out whilst lying in bed, was annoying me too much

Right that's it, this game can go **** itself. The saves gone wonky and lost me a load of progress so **** this I can't be bothered.
Basically (last episode information)
in order to get past the shield covering the secret entrance in episode 8 you need to get a 75 spectral vision level, for this you gain persistance and can throw things over the shield. Anyway I did this, got past the thing creating the shield, got into the secret building and was on my way to solving a puzzle approaching the last few sequences of the episode. The thing then freezes and when I restart my machine I am back to level 50 spectral vision meaning I have to go after a load of evil tree roots again.
I'm ****ing fuming right now

I keep checking car gloveboxes, but no luck
Try taxis, every single taxi glove compartment has a health spray can in it.Last edited by mr_woo; 22-06-2008, 23:03.

The only scarey thing about the new alone in the dark is the fear of it loading properly and being forced to play itBring back the original over this POS anyday.

Im enjoying it on the PC myself. Finally got it to work, took me two days though as i had to create a multiboot system with windows xp 32 and vista 64bit.
At least the effort was worth it and i can no play some older pc games again. It runs really good on the pc, i was expecting some slowdown but im not getting any of that and i have everything running at max.
People are commenting on the controls. They arn't that bad, its just they don't co-exist as you'd expect between first and third person. Some things i would probably have improved myself like allowing you to select a flammable bottle with sticky tape, i don't see the logic not allowing you to do that. Third person view is preety much resident evil 1, sometimes i keep forgetting this and pressing the left trigger to pull my weapon. They are just midly annoying, its not streamlined as similar games in that regard.
The one thing that puzzles me is the entire concept of the game. Its called Alone in the Dark, you'd expect alot of chills and a sense of foreboding in the atmosphere like in the previous games. You don't get any of that, they focused everything on a sense of urgency and destruction. I think they should have called it something else to be honest.
At least im enjoying it.

Just started this and (unsurprisingly) I'm having a hell of a time with the controls. Closest I can describe the first and third person mix is like wanking and driving a HGV at the same time. You end up all over the shop and doing neither very well.
That said, my brain is now slowly learning that things like left and right bumper are the left and right hand and it's `A` to use something, and it's all starting to come together in some shape.
`Clunk` factor aside there does seem to be a good game struggling to get out and the premise still interests me, so I'll be bearing with it.
