wasnt she top tier on the most recent lists?
i've been using her pretty much exclusively since the beginning, but she is very difficult to use. theres an awful lot of ways to get into her ultra too. shame i'm pretty rubbish with her. but its still early days, and shes definitely my favourite.

Well had a few games online......the lag was fairly bad in most of them ..the Timing difference threw me off

A few decent games though.....think throws have way to much priority though

hope someone can help, ive finaly got a ps3 streetfighter pad, it came without instructions though, ive installed the dongle into ps3, and turned the controller on, but the controller flashes as if its looking for the dongle but doesnt find it, no light comes on on the dongle either, what am i doing wrong?

        Comment

With the PS3 turned on, once you plug in the dongle it should have a red flashing light if the pad is off or a solid red light if the pad is on and has had the PS button on it pressed.

If that is not happening, then it sounds like a faulty dongle/pad

I think Viper is gonna a wicked character but you've got to have some serious skills to use her properly. I can't use her effectively for toffee >_<

Someone told me Daigo had started using her but I can't find any vids on youtube.

            C Tier!? I think not.
Correct (from what I've been told)! It would seem that the extra Thunder Knuckle (the cancelled one) is there to stop her actually jumping, so she can hit with a proper Thunder Knuckle as the opponent's falling and then EX Flame Kick.

And, yes, not that it matters all that much with regards to us, C. Viper is now rated as top-tier along with Sagat and Gief.

so when it comes to top tier how do they define that ? is it just a case of speed and power and combo potential .....or is there more to it then that

I'm not so sure I agree with viper being top tier.

To me, tier is determined by the effort / effectiveness ratio. The less effort required to match a certain level of effectiveness, the higher the tier.

Don't they figure it out by having two (or more?) top SF players go at it doing all the possible matches you can have 10 times each?

I'm not really sure myself, like.

Yeah, it's all about assessing players of equal skill and determining how many times a character would win against another in a series of 10 via actual competitions. Most of the matchups are of the 5-5 variety so a lot of characters are quite balanced against most others. Almost all the rest are 6-4, there are only a couple of 7-3 in there.

I'm not sure there are hard and fast rules, as I hear it's kinda arbitrary anyway despite all that.

                      Comment

Perhaps. But I think a good rule is that for the most part, most characters have an almost equal chance against most others.

Managed to get the 10 ranked wins in a row achievement tonight; surprised me cos I didn't realise I was on for it in the last match, I thought I had only about 7 or 8 in a row at that point

Basically though, it was a case of playing ANY match I could connect into... I'd get 10-15 refuseds before finding a free slot. Too many people playing?! New observation: I'm finding the Akuma players even more useless than the Kens. To which I've actually played a couple of very decent Ken players now, but no competent Akumas.

Yea, I've been thinking something similar...

I think it has to include some kind of a skill level requirement too. It's all very well to say Viper is top tier but the skill required to use her effectively is insane.

At a mid skill level the tiering of characters is completely different IMO, and characters like Viper are a low tier in comparison to someone like Ryu/Ken.

I used Dictator to get to 3500 BPs and have been using Dhalsim ever since. My win ratio is now out of the window and my current level is 2800, which it's been around for a while. Did I suddenly just lose skill or is it the fact that the character I'm using at my skill level is a lower tier?

It's hard to gage but I think characters who are of a more effortlessly powerful should be considered a higher tier

When playing SF4 I pull off big combo's generally by luck for example Ryu's last hard challenge.

I think in order to understand the tiiming better (the link assist doesnt help) I need understand the frames and on which frame(s) to put in the input.

Which websites can help with that?

                            Comment

SF's have never been 'frame counting' based like the VF series.

No, but making use of frame data isn't exactly useless either. For example, knowing which moves give you frame advantage on block is useful for figuring out which moves are safer than others.

Shozuki: There's frame data in the prima guide for SF4. Alternatively, you could find some frame data dotted about the srk forums/wiki, and probably around EventHubs too. However, Kernow is right in the sense that looking at frame data isn't going to help you figure out the timings quite so much - it's hard to percieve 1/60th of a second...
