The House of the Dead: Overkill [Wii]

"They came for brains, you gave them bullets!"

One word for this, awesome! Played it for about an hour so far and thoroughly enjoyed it. The game certainly lets you know its grindhouse influences at every opportunity. There is some extremely crude humour (which is great!), gore and swearing pretty much everywhere you go, even the menus! I won't ruin it for anyone but there is one particular song that plays if you stay in the menus which is hilarious.

Onto the gameplay itself, I'm not much of a light gun game expert so it took me a couple of tries to get the calibration to my liking (using the perfect shot gun) but once I did I was blasting away zombies with considerable ease.

I have only played the first scenario (Papa'a Palace of Pain) a couple of times so far and the set up is as you would would expect, go through the level blasting away zombies on your way. There are a few added bells and whistles though to add some replayability, the main one being the combo meter. You build up the meter by killing 5 zombies in a row, missing a shot or getting hit will reset the meter. Oh and there are also a few pick-ups in each level too, my favourite being the "slow mo-fo mode" one!

Visually the game isn't gonna win any awards but for a Wii light gun game it looks pretty decent. Strangely enough though I think the visuals go really well with the whole grindhouse asthetic of the game. its manages to pull off the whole retro look really well.

So yeah, HOTD Overkill is a top notch light gun game. It doesn't take itself too seriously and in doing so it turns out to be an immense amount of fun. If you have a Wii and are even remotely into light gun games, then don't hesistate in picking this up. Hell, just pick it up to hear the words "Daddy, can I be mutant?" while you browse the menus!

Just coming to do a first play on this, you just beat me to it with exactly the same impressions i have. This game is fantastic.

I want to start off my impressions with the following

*claps and cheers the developer (Headstrong games), while shouting THANK YOU*

This game could have quite happily sat on PS3 and Xbox 360 and gone unnoticed, it has the best chance on Wii. The Wii needs a game like this and the sales of Resi 4 show the market is there.

ezee ryder has said it perfectly, the only thing he (or she) did not cover was the choppy frame rate. The game has a tendancy to push the wii, while graphically its a fair shot for a Wii game add this to the ongoing action of say 10 zombies or fast movements then you can get a bit of a stutter. Thought so far this had never been at an important time and its quite rare.

One new inclusion which was not mentioned was the camera nudge, it works extremely well. Don't worry your not in control of the camera, however you can nudge it, maybe a few CMs to the left or right up or down. While this may not seam like anything important, the game has been designed in a way that this is an important inclusion. You may have 4 or more zombies coming at you, at the same time. To get a perfect headshot on the left or right end ones, it would be better to have them closer to the middle of the screen and the nudge lets you do this. It is also used fo getting items you maybe alongside or close to. All you do is point slightly in the direction you want to nudge and it will do that, so it helps a lot getting that perfect shot.

The game warrents its 18 rating, its very heavy on the swearing and gore.

I just want to add THIS GAME IS GREAT!

I hope it can be the game to prove the Wii still has a market for these titles, as the control scheme could come up with some original adult themed games.

I only just read about the camera nudge thing in the manual, as you say it is a nice little addition.

You're also spot on about the little stutter in the framerate, picked up on it just now as I was playing. It is definitely noticeable but nothing game breaking I think.

oh and I'm a "he", the "she" only comes out on weekends! lol!

Sound good guys. Will have mine tomorrow. Does the game have checkpoints you can save at or do you have to play through this in classic arcade stylee in one sitting?

I think it is the latter, not too sure though. Each film/scenario isn't too long though so it's not too much of an issue.

The stage is the checkpoint. If you beat the stage you can play on from the next one after a restart.

The game also features minigames and a mode i am yet to unlock

Cool. My girlfriend like to run through the gun games with me, but she's not one for putting in a shift

There is a limited edition box set with 2 mini shotgun wiimote shells. However i am using the Wii Zapper, i would not see it working with just the Wiimote.

I feel sorry for anyone attempting to play it using the Wii Zapper.

I'm hopefully getting this tomorrow - really looking forward to getting into some good old-fashioned zombie shooting. Don't suppose you caught sight of how much the limited edition set is did ya? Is it just an online thing... ?

The actual Bang Bang Box is Australia only, bizarrely. Unless they changed it recently.
