"They came for brains, you gave them bullets!"
One word for this, awesome! Played it for about an hour so far and thoroughly enjoyed it. The game certainly lets you know its grindhouse influences at every opportunity. There is some extremely crude humour (which is great!), gore and swearing pretty much everywhere you go, even the menus! I won't ruin it for anyone but there is one particular song that plays if you stay in the menus which is hilarious.
Onto the gameplay itself, I'm not much of a light gun game expert so it took me a couple of tries to get the calibration to my liking (using the perfect shot gun) but once I did I was blasting away zombies with considerable ease.
I have only played the first scenario (Papa'a Palace of Pain) a couple of times so far and the set up is as you would would expect, go through the level blasting away zombies on your way. There are a few added bells and whistles though to add some replayability, the main one being the combo meter. You build up the meter by killing 5 zombies in a row, missing a shot or getting hit will reset the meter. Oh and there are also a few pick-ups in each level too, my favourite being the "slow mo-fo mode" one!
Visually the game isn't gonna win any awards but for a Wii light gun game it looks pretty decent. Strangely enough though I think the visuals go really well with the whole grindhouse asthetic of the game. its manages to pull off the whole retro look really well.
So yeah, HOTD Overkill is a top notch light gun game. It doesn't take itself too seriously and in doing so it turns out to be an immense amount of fun. If you have a Wii and are even remotely into light gun games, then don't hesistate in picking this up. Hell, just pick it up to hear the words "Daddy, can I be mutant?" while you browse the menus!
