Like paul says, if you look past the numerous shortcomings and focus on it's splendour then it's really quite an experience.

If I was going on an Achievement mission with this game, are there any that require you to do things in areas you cannot get back to, like the first couple of diaries in Bioshock, or can I go back to areas to find flags etc?

The 'conversationalist' achivement is pretty much one of those ones where if you miss one, you need to restart with a new game save to get it.
I think thats the only one really.
Flags collected do not carry over to a new game.

really enjoying it but bloody hell, its got some of the most annoying npc's ever created. The beggars and the drunks drive me nuts!

That's the whole point of the beggars and drunks though so, in a sense, the npc's are brilliant and very successful.

One of them caused me to royally screw up an assassination. Was all ready to stealth kill and a drunk pushed me into the target causing the guards to kick off. Was less than pleased!

I remember one mission in particular that involved multiple targets needing taking out within 3 minutes and the same couple of drunks kept messing it up again and again and were responsible for my replaying the mission around a dozen times. It was hugely annoying and I came quite close to smashing the controller but since then, when playing the game, I always pre-emptively punch all drunks in the face.

I made it my mission when I played it to stealth kill all drunks, beggers and nutjobs soon solves issues when you get to the main mission on that level. Before a woman uttered I need to eat crap she went bleuugh as I shoved my butter knife into her gut, let them eat cake I say

Knifing them's good fun too, granted, but after smacking 'em around I enjoy watching them run for their lives in terror. It's very satisfying.

Well the 360 version has more downloadable women and cheaper booze so I'd go for that.

Not played the PS3 version but apparently the 360 version has a better frame rate and shorter loading times.
