Well, why is this whole authentication an issue. I always get prompted to authenticate software, or to register it on the internet. I'm usually off-line and just decline. So if you are on a PC w/out internet, or just don't want to connect via steam, can you not decline the registration/authnication of HL2 when you are prompted?

Is this only an issue becuase you're using valve software and not IE, or do you HAVE TO connect to play single player, no questions?

Roffle - has anyone read this thread from the beginning lately? Interesting and amusing stuff, it starts off over a year ago and goes on the tragic journey of delay after delay, to the code "leak", conspiracies, some truly baffling posts by nips ( ) , lots of despair followed by redemption.

At least there's no line rental then, right?

I've been paying for broadband I can't use for the last few months due to my accomodation situation
Hoping to get back online for Halo 2.

wtf, I've always been coherent and sound in all my posts.

*runs back to double check* ...From what pages onwards does the lack of HL2 induce delerium?

When it starts getting to around mid September things start going a bit crazy. And then go downhill from there.

I just took a look after you said that. In hindsight, some of the comments are very funny and way of the mark. The whole stolen source code debacle for example, where I said it would hurt the anticipation levels for Half-Life 2 in the run up to release. Hasn't quite worked out like that has it?

Who knows, by page 200 we may actually be able to talk about the game

Not quite arrived yet, but we're getting there.

Anyway, I'm sure i've read a few times that they plan to release a little demo/benchmarking HL2 program before the game is released. If it does surface on Sept 30th as they've promised we could see it any day now!
Ha, Fire was right, and only a year late.

That's brilliant. Good work boy. This is funny stuff and it's only page 1.

Where is fire anyway? I haven't seen him in ages. I hope he comes back here for release

There's some wonderful frustration when the game got put back a couple of weeks to Oct 2003, followed by fury, exasperation, disgust, apathy, and then glimmers of hope start appearing.

You have to authenticate your copy online through Steam before you'll be allowed to play. In other words, Valve will probably supply you with a CD key or the final files needed to unlock the game (the same Steam users need) when you've been validated. It's a one-off anti-piracy measure which seems mandatory to play Half-Life 2. You don't need to connect every single time you play from then on however.

Steam will be needed for the game because that's essentially what it runs through. The game won't work on it's own. When you click the Half-Life 2 icon or activate it from the start menu, then Steam will start underneath so to speak.

                          I doubt that

If anything the prices will rise. I can see where you're coming from, using the publisher model, but people tend to be greedy. It'll soon be ?30 for a game, with no physical disks, just a download! (long argument, but i cba to go into it ;p)
I see what you mean, but I'd like to believe that without manufacturing costs, developers offering their games online would do so cheaper to attract a wider audience and initially (at the very least) attract more people to buying their games online.

But now the game is about to be released and all is forgiven. It actually worked out well in the long run because I'm now more excited. I can't wait for this game, I'm totally pumped and jumpin'. I'm going to stay up for 36 hours when HL2 is released. It's gonna rock. Thank you so much for possibly the best thread evar!
