It'll be a great loss to gaming when Gabe dies at 38 of a pizza-induced cardiac

I'm dissapointed. I don't think that you people totally realise that we could be playing this game in under 12 days!

      12 DAYS!!

I'm getting really excited now. I can make no commitments.

      I'm starting to go crazy!

      HYPE! HYPE! HYPE!

Words can't describe how excitied I am about HL2. Just watched the big e3 vid again

The engine , playing it single player - and then with sven co-op. TFC2 and CS2 will arrive and i'll just bloody well explode!!!!!

Many 100's and 100's of hours will be spent playing the HL2 engine in some form or another.

              10 Days To Go !!!!!

Apparently the guy who went to the Valve office was told that Steam would be used to distribute the majority of the game in an encoded format and then unlocked and updated at the release date

A friend of mine who runs a computer hardware shop, and dabbles in games from time to time, has recieved e-mails from distrubutors saying that if he want's to order copies then the orders need to be put in now for Sept 30th

              Sounds promising

If it has any chance of making the 30th it needs to go gold in the next couple of days.

It will be a tense couple of days.

HL2 could have gone gold a while ago - they arn't obliged to tell us.

We'll just have to wait and see omg - I can't take it!

They wouldn't do that to us.

                    Would they?

                    OMG

The guy who went on the tour also said that Gabe Newell said they would announce when the game goes gold. Apparently the original Half Life went gold 4 days before it hit the stores, anyone know if that's true?

Going gold isn't a big deal apparently.

In game development it is small comapred to actually getting the game on shelves. 'Going Gold' is a bit of a buzz phrase at the moment and actually hold only a small amount of importance.

It is quite uncommon for developers to state when thier product goes gold. And UT2k3 only went gold 4 days before release, so, all in all, it's not too much to worry about.

They have had 4 years on this game, and I believe only spoke about it to EDGE 'n' all when it was very near completion. If they say Sept 30th and are telling retailers to get pre-orders in, then be prepared for Sept 30th.

Oh, and I sent another e-mail to gameplay.co.uk and I still got the:

                          'Awaiting confirmation from publisher' response....

Hopefully it will be the 30th. I really hope so. I've put my social life on hold for a month to pay for this game and the new graphics card it requires (just bagged myself a shiny new Radeon 9800 Pro... sweeeet).

                              One thought thats just occurred!

Valve aren't planning on issuing patches through this Steam thing are they? They'll be available as normal downloads too right? Does anyone know. The latter would seem sensible... but....

And if you haven't guessed yet - I'm stuck on 56k ft:

I'm pretty sure that I read they would distribute patches through FTP and STEAM, so I wouldn't worry.

If they decided to only use STEAM it wouldn't be long before they caved in due to the HUGE amount of e-mails complaining.

*speculation* The patches will probably also be on the front of magazines. That would sure boost magazine sales if the only other way to get updates was through STEAM.
