Been playing Counter Strike:Source all evening. Fun.

Runs like a dream too, I have it on max detail at 1600x1200 with 4X anti-aliasing and it rarely skips a frame. Smooth as can be. And all running on a clunky old Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb. I have high hopes Half Life 2 will run as well, which will be nice after struggling with Doom 3.

Also included with CS:Source is the E3 Half Life 2 tech demo they showed a few years back, the one with the mirrors and frosted glass stuff. Quite pretty, and it records your frames per second at the end. I scored 49.9fps, at 1600x1200 4x FSAA. Not too bad, and CS:Source itself was quite a bit quicker as it uses fewer effects.

That said, aside from the odd effect here and there Source isn't exactly doing anything clever. Kind of like the Quake 2 engine with much, much higher res textures and more polys. No realtime shadows or lights (aside from special cases such as characters and the torch). BUT, it's pretty enough and I'm certainly thankful for the frame rate.

Half Life 2 now sits on my hard drive. I can even see the 'HL2.exe' icon there... IF ONLY I COULD RUN IT NOW!!!

Well I would have thought the facial animation and lip synching was some of the "clever" things the source engine could do.

Yes that's true, although there is none of that in Counter Strike: Source.

I was refering to the 'in your face' rendering effects. It's a pretty stark comparison to Doom 3.

Not to say it isn't pretty, as it is, just in an old school kind of way.

I think I might have to think about getting a new PC if the price is reasonable.
(and the game is THAT good)

Can anyone confirm whether the DVD version of the game comes with Counter-Strike and Half-Life Source? Or do you have to go through Steam? (sorry if it's been answered before, it's a veh long thread)

The standard edition comes with HL2 and CS:Source, the collectors edition comes with CS:Source, HL:Source and HL2.

But I was just searching through the thread for something similiar and I came across this:

"I've just remembered that the situation with the UK is a bit strange. Since pretty much everywhere else the standard edition will be on 3 or more cds whereas the collector's edition will be on dvd. However in the uk, the standard edition is on dvd(which may mean HL: source comes with it, though I think it's unlikely, or that the standard edition in the UK might actually be the collector's edition). It's kind of confusing."

Mood said this over a year ago just after the source code leak, who would of thought he was right.

You don't have to go through steam to get HLource. As has been mentioned the retail collector's edition comes with HL: source(it's the only way outside of steam to get it). You can order the collector's edition from GAME's website.

Thanks for that guys. I couldn't find a collectors edition anywhere, and it didn't occur to me to try Game ;-)
