I needed a racing fix today, so I tried this again. I didn't really have much fun in the SP and the MP, so I thought I might try the "Hot Lap" mode (from the Main Menu), as it would be a challenge to beat some of the times on the leaderboards.

And then the fun was instantly sucked out of it. Why no rolling start on this mode? You start (again) on the grid, so your first lap is utterly, utterly pointless. Leads me to believe maybe no one playtested this mode at all.

I would post on Turn10's forum to ask them why there is no rolling start in HotLap, but I would be wasting my time. No doubt loads of replies would say "its to warm up your tyres..." or something equally as dumb.

Or maybe it's because you won't get a perfect start to your lap?

That way it requires some effort to get up to full speed for your run over the start / finish line.

Seems over the top to me. Some of the courses, depending on which car of course, are pretty immense, and can take up to 4-5 minutes to get around. All so that you can start your perfect 2nd lap? Not much fun.

I will post over at Turn10's forum and let you know what the replies are. Should be fun.

EDIT - Looks like it was already raised 6 months ago, so I guess that is a "NO" then.

In summary, Gran Turismo is the best game for HotLaps then.

HOTLAP is for me the perfect place to try out cars I haven't bought yet, so getting a standing start makes it good to see how different cars starts are off the line...
So I think it's hard to please everyone with this, some like a rolling start and some don't, there will always be 2 sides.
But I really cannot see the problem of doing more then 1 lap in hotlap mode ? .. .

If you are setting out to beat times then I can understand frustration with being forced to complete a flying lap.

As ghosts and best times demonstrate however, all the factors have to come together for a driver to put in a good lap. Part of that is the exit speed of the last corner and their line as they approach it. Gran Turismo 4 gave you a flying start but the car was going nowhere near fast enough for the lap time to count.

Even with long tracks, I have to reacquaint myself with the layout before I knuckle down for a lap!

I'm not particularly bothered about a rolling start or not for a hot lap/time trial mode.

F1 06 was good as it gave you a choice of having a rolling start or not. GT5 Prologue is probably the best though, as it starts you a few corners or so before the start/finish so that you don't have to do a whole lap, but you still have to nail the run up to the lap for a good time.

What's with all the new cars on all the DLC packs, where is the old classic motorsport stuff?

Indeed, the list of classic motorsport cars that was thrown around a few months ago is more enticing. This list reminds me of the current line up Evo Magazine have in their fast fleet!

Either way, I've got the pack on my download queue when I get home. Looking forward to the Mercedes E63 out of them all.

Forza 3 was most obviously heavily rushed for release as nearly half of the cockpit views are left in an unfinished, loveless state. most annoying for me are the invisible off-track stoppers which instantly slow down your car to a crawl. that's not only unrealistic but most of all very inconsistently and unprofessionally implemented. Turn10 didn't even bother to patch this yet.

Exactly! It's all footballers motors or middle management motorway fast cruisers. For a game supposedly about motorsport and racing the car lists are more like who paid them to advertise their new cars.

I don't think it's going to be patched, it's an automatic barrier to stop people crossing corners. Unfortunately you can see the multiplayer focus as if you're running wide in single player, the car gets a bout of the flu and grinds to a halt.

I don't agree with your comments regarding the quality of the game though. The game glistens and is a thoroughly polished production. However the interior car modelling is not up to the standards of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and that hurts some of the more exotically detailed cars.

There aren't enough of these. I wish they would add some on Sebring to stop people cutting corners.

Forza 3's first pack were really desirable new cars that included the GT-R and the Lola Aston martin. Turn 10 have been brilliant in releasing consistent car and track packs, but their focus has been on new cars. Although that's no bad thing, this pack is highlighting just how many new cars are released that are not much different than their MK1 predecessor.

Judging by their reliable turn out, I'm sure we'll start seeing a few classics creeping into the game. Ideally I would love to see some of old Group B rally models appear such as the Lancia 037, some classic GT and Race cars and a few tracks such as Spa.

If a few great tracks eventually see the light of day along with a few classics, I'll be very happy.

i fear you didn't get my point mate. theses invisible "stoppers" are not only unrealistic but most of all highly unprofessionally implemented as they are inconsistent in area and strength of effect. sometimes it's just vital to cut corners or hit the green, either by making a driving mistake or for an evasion manoeuvre. there are much better ways to punish shortcut cheaters in racing games.
