Even with it disabled the reticle still tracks the enemies briefly when looking down the scope, both in campaign and multiplayer, so I don't know what it actually does.

It was certainly on in COD 4, not really sure about the others. I am not sure if it auto aim or that the gun magnetises to the enemies when you switch between the scope and no scope and there is a certain error correction/pull when you fire.
I think Halo does a similar thing.
I guess this maybe a class of auto aim, I always though of auto aim of the bullets just going towards the target if you aim is off a little.

Yeah mine was about that when I gave up playing. I played I got better, I didn't cheat with a mate. Its just sad.
