I've had about 90 minutes with the 360 version and I really enjoyed myself
Firstly, the framerate is better than the 360 demo. Judge your purchase with the PS3 demo if you can. That said, it's still the games biggest flaw. It struggles to meet 30fps a lot of the time and there's some tearing too. The 60fps snobs who peruse this forum should stick to Forza
Personally, it doesn't bother me much. On the flip side the game is very pretty in places and extremely colourful, which is refreshing these days.
The tracks are a decent length and usually spacious, designed with the drift boost in mind. I have to say however that no matter how much cool trackside detail and fan service the different themed courses bring to the table, the actual layout design is pretty average and often uninspired. Most of them have a very F-zero GX or Rainbow Road feel. This does give the action a lot of room however and corners are usually easy to see coming (as is crucial for split-screen).
Handling and controls are solid. Drifting feels a bit like Outrun would with a drift button and the boost works just like Mario Kart, as does pretty much everything including the weapons and this is another valid criticism - it's a clone with SEGA characters. Realistically though, what more would you want?
All in all I feel the game is to Mario Kart what Superstars Tennis was to Mario Tennis, and despite its flaws, I really enjoyed Superstars Tennis. If you can forgive a lack of originality and a less than smooth framerate, its a fun, well presented, colourful racer bursting with character and SEGA fan service. We'll see how balanced the whole experience is and if multiplayer holds up but so far its well worth ?30 of any SEGA fanboy's money.
