Hmmm... infinite wrench is that powerful on Normal? Interesting... but you'll need your guns later on for other enemies you can't really clobber properly...

And yes, don't read the cards until you've completed the game. To think you haven't even really begun to encounter how screwed up some parts are
Lie with passion and be forever damned...

sketcz is right. It's almost as good following you through as it was to play. Cannot wait to see what you make of some of the stuff later on

I found the combat quite easy - the problem is later zombies have massive health so it becomes a series of: "Stand around for 15 seconds while a zombie dances around and I fill him with bullets" - repeat for the next 20 zombies.

JazzFunk, you haven't even begun to see what Greenvale has to offer. Also, do you realise your forum name is an anagram of: Zak Zfnuj

        Coincidence?

I think I was simplifying things a tad, generally referring to the majority of the standard zombies, the 'fatty' zombos take three hits and on doing the

          Cope's Tunnel

sidequest, some of the gun-armed zombies can take about 4/5 hits before they go down.

I'm pussyfooting a bit but am really, REALLY craving to experience the f*cked-upness all you peeps are raving about. I mean, what I've witnessed so far is pretty damn bipolar (last cutscene I had was in Nick's diner,

where York starts talking about a killer who used to drink iced rum out of his female victims' skulls, piss in them AND also drink rum out of the same pissed-in skulls!

) Also just had my first

          Sigourney

          side mission,

gotta get that pot back while it's still warm

          !!!

Cheers Charles, thought I was maybe rambling on a bit too much about the minutiae of the whole thing but this is a very 'me' type of game, the last game I felt this enthused about was Mass Effect, which was my GOTY last year, even if I was three years late playing it(!)

Lollerz, my coffee warned me about it.

Currently spending more quality time with this, bit peed-off because I start nights tomorrow, seven in a row, just hope I can keep up some semblance of progression with this game because the momentum keeps on gaining...

I agree This is making me very enthusiastic about starting another playthough

I'm very particular about my biscuits

            Comment

^Oh, Thomas' biscuits are quite excellent, maybe much more than that, the balance of milk and butter he achieved there is somewhat legendary.

Think I'm finally at a point where the side quest 'baggage' of the game is finally starting to quell the OCD a bit, thinking I'm on a 'down' right now, I can finally start to continue the main quest (only on about 2-1 right now). Got about 42-3 of the trading cards (been fishing a ton!) plus have the side quests in the mid twenties (got the

              infinite SMG, infinite Magnum

, plus what I believe to be an

              infinite flamethrower/burning-type thing from Brian

, who is possibly meant to resemble Marilyn Manson but is actually an *almost* pre-death Michael Jackson in a bad hat.)

              Just started the

              Muses art gallery bit

, feel somewhat drunk and have enough respect for this game to not play it in this state, lest I miss any tiny, precious moments of it, I'm instead gonna play online Bioshock 2 for a bit, Deadly Premonition is proper densely packed with oodles of glorious madness (I feel I'm now on the very cusp of the extremities it will provide, totally can't wait), it requires at least a semi-clear head to follow and enjoy AND remember it.

PS: During the driving bits of this episode, York's talking about

Richard Donner films, starts off by saying how he preferred John Williams' Superman main themes to Star Wars' main theme, eventually ends up talking about John Badham and Malcolm McDowell* and Blue Thunder, comes to a pause-point where he says "Speak your mind", just wondering if you could respond via the 360 headset (I don't have one),

wonder if it makes any actual difference to the game(???)

              *But he never mentioned

O Lucky Man, Malcolm's finest post-Clockwork Orange moment, a film madder than this game, I was a tad disappointed by that (though it's understandable given York's obsession with mid-80s slickness

              ).

The flamethrower is a great weapon for a specific enemy later on - just in case you have trouble them.

It's the "wall people", who can prove tricky with standard arms, but the flamer cuts em right down.

                  Regarding Brian,

there is a theory he is a living left over of 1946... that might make more sense as you get a little further into the game

                  ...

Those enemies Sketca mentioned, there's a trick them. Took me a while to work it out though.

Not much chance to post much now as zipping off to work in a few minutes.

Played a few more hours, did the

                      art gallery puzzle

section and mopped up a few more subquests/trading cards.

                      Tailed

                      Forrest Kaysen

                      to the park,

                      Isaiah, Isaac and Willie

in tow. Darn it, there's something just wrong about that bloke, I don't know if

                      Paedogeddon

is on the cards here(??) but 'tis all a bit sinister, especially using

Willie the dog as bait, like "d'ya wanna see some puppies?"

n' all that. I'm probably wrong but we shall see what eventually transpires.

Must remind myself not to use

Carol's car again, I find the driving music

                      *incredibly* depressing, makes the

thrash metal of EDIT: *not* Keith's car, the Corvette-type one) 's car sound positively uplifting

                      (and bearable).

Bah! It's soooo awkward playing this when working nights!!!

Feel a tad drowsy when I get in, try to pump time into the 'lesser' bits, where you don't need to "focus" too much (ie. the side missions and

                        replaying the otherworld sections

) but have limited chance to progress the main story, so have been using my brief, 1-2.5 hour "focused" times to gradually move along.

                        Currently experiencing the aftermath of

Diane's death in the art gallery

. Pretty strange to think that

Nick AND Forrest were boning her

                        , would've never've thought that of
                        .

I also started to rethink my opinion of

Nick, whom I'd previously found to one of the least likeable characters since Peter Kay, his pouty, petulant, Paul Le Mat + Oliver Platt pudgy, upcurved nose-style face and beligerently arrogant attitude

made him the most detestable videogame character I've ever encountered. But, now he's 'vulnerable', I'm rolling back my prior opinions like mad (it's funny, this game simulates life in odd ways).

Pretty touched by the bar sequence where

George finally starts to Bond with York

, reveals how he got that

mysterious litany of scars upon his back

                        . It made me like

George even more because I knew my York liked George anyway (York just accepts stuff without pride) and George was being stubborn about ish, and he finally acknowledged this

                        .

PS: Another odd thing: I always play my DS Lite during fallow periods at work on nights, the current game I've been playing the past few nights has been Dementium: The Ward and the current boss I'm at is some bastard

                        GASMASK WHEELCHAIR

                        bloke!!!!!

Oh man, I love coming to this thread to read these continued entries. It's like Deadly Premonition: The Novelisation by JazzFunk

And damn, I can't even comment on half this stuff yet because of spoilers.

We're probably building this up too much by saying stuff like this, and you're going to be disappointed at the end... Then again, maybe your mind is really going to go >POP< come the latter chapters. I hope so anyway.

To help this, allow me to lower your expectations: it's all fairly standard and boring at the end, with everyone friends and having learned some valuable life lessons. And after York pulls the mask off the killer, he explains he would have gotten away with it, if it weren't for those pesky kids. It's about as exciting as a slow Miss Marple book...

As for gasmask men in wheelchairs, not as uncommon as you may think:

^Cheers, thanks for the encouragement, I often feel like I'm just aimlessly rambling on, writing about this game (when I haven't even got very far at that!) but it's the sort of game that seems to merit a running commentary, given how sweetly and thoroughly bat**** insane it is.

Again, not had that much time to get much further than my last post. Kicked off with replaying the

                            art gallery otherworld

section and I'm starting to see where you guys are coming from in terms of the combat, the

zombiefolk are taking a *lot* of shots to put down (infinite SMG feels more like a paintball gun, the normal SMG's not far off and the non-infinite shotgun feels pretty underpowered, too, plus the infinite Magnum, with its 4-bullet capacity and long reload is pretty much useless against close enemies without enough time to aim properly).

                            Then, got the second

                            'spiritual map'

from the Milk Barn, managed to do it first time but it was hella stressful,

zombs take mega damage, plus a massive OD of the Crawling Shadows in the mid-sections. Ended up doing it with 25% health left and just one small medkit! Snagged an infy shotgun as a result, though I feel the standard shotgun feels vaguely impotent in this and I guess the infy one will be weaker

                            .

                            (Know the

flamethrower initially seemed the best way to kill the Crawling Shadows on first encountering them, but now they're 'hard', I found dispatching them with the shotgun easier as the run/attack/avoid pattern is much less prone to aiming problems, ie. you won't be stuck 1ft away from C.S., be happily burning them, they teleport, you run out of gas and reload and it's stick-a-waggle time, several more medkits gone

. It's a time-consuming biz, no doubt, with these things anyway, I guess people have their own preferred techniques).

Am now on my second visit to

                            Harry's/Gasmask Wheelchair

                            's pad, am delivering the

                            red seeds

I found at the cemetery, done the second puzzle so I can visit him again, am just full of the wonder of discovery again, I've just found another massive environment I want to explore!!!

                            Hope Hazza makes that

                            gasmask-muffled puking noise

again like he did when I first met him in Nick's diner, it added a certain 'texture' to him. Also hope Michael keeps on with those

endearingly ****ty rhymes that simply DO NOT SCAN, ruddy children would be embarrassed to hand that crap in as homework

                            !!

After a two day period of beard growth, I've decided my York must be always shaven, and his suits must be cleaned immediately upon them not appearing to be 'almost brand new' (can't stand the flies!) He's currently sporting the '

                            Evergreen

' suit, it's feel is reminiscent of elegant, moneyed countryfolk, wax jackets and tweed, but also a tad feral, maybe slightly Frazer Hines-ish.

A couple more observations. In the earlier chapters, pre-

                            Nick's incarceration

, one of the patrons in the diner, the beardy, white-haired bloke on the left hand side, sitting on the stools by the main counter area *IS* someone at work, he's called Keith. He's in this game but doesn't know he is. Maybe he does but isn't letting on(?)

Also, as I've been playing it in awkward, nibble/bite-sized chunks this week, I tend to end up on just finishing an

                            otherworld

bit, having a bath and heading out to work at around 9pm. On entering the darkness outside, I get this mini-dose of Teh Phear, and hear that swirly music in my mind, survey the surrounding landscape tentatively, kind of 'aim' with my mind with my in-mind

                            infinite SMG

for a few moments. Weird in a bad way, weird in a good way, all weird.

PS: Now that the combat's getting a tad more stressful/time consuming, are there mega rewards for

                            replaying the otherworld bits

or is it all just about the

                            trading cards

? I mean, I'm definitely gonna go for all the

trading cards, but in the later otherworld replays, do you get anything else bar trading cards

                            ???

PPS: All this 'Zach' stuff, I initially found it an endearingly odd quirk, then had a very strong feeling that maybe 'Zach'

                            might be me, the player

, now I don't know where all this is heading, not sure of anything, anymore (which is cool).

                            PPPS: I'm starting to find
kind of attractive, but not in an obviously sexual way. Bar the obvious tits heaven of the DOA games, I've never found pixellated game dames attractive in the slightest. Again, this is weird but bad but good, this is a first, says something about this game, acid test n' that. /

PPPPS: Don't any of you guys EVER consider purchasing 'Goblin' Irish Stew, it's horrific, full of tubey, murky, unchewable membraney bits, lowest-common-denominator offally squish, *plus* minor discs of animal bone, like something out of the original 70s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Leatherface would be slavering this gloop, a greasy, repellent sludge, almost like eating bleached sick. But the group named 'Goblin' is very cool, they have no connection to this particularly bad Irish Stew, they made very cool music in the 70s and early 80s.

Ace, it's hooking you in and I have the feeling you're really going to be really into this come the final sections.

I'm copying this from GameFAQs since I don't want to make any mistakes, but for other world items, the only essential one is this in Chapter 7:

Next, replay the Galaxy of Terror Other World. Like the Sheriff's Department, there are two items to get here. The first of these items is [Trading Card 48: Red Seeds], located in one of the bathroom stalls. The second, the [5.56 Assault Rifle CQB (Infinite)], is in the last room, in front of the piano.

Said weapon is probably my favourite in the game, very powerful, lots of ammo, cuts most enemies down like butter. Once you have it, you shouldn't need anything else and can just enjoy stuff. Always be sure to stock up on health kits, since there is one story section which proved a little tricky for me later on.

                              Not toooo far off now.
