They are not completely different, and not simply because they're both third-person action titles. There's a speed and an emphasis on flashy showboating to get the most out of the game in both titles that's been very much a signature of several games Mikami's been involved with over the past few years. They do stand apart, and Vanquish is much more than Gears of War X Bayonetta (ew, regretting that mental image already) but at the same time the comparison isn't entirely unwarranted.

How can firing a gun ever translate to flashy show boating though? Sure, you can fire it during a slow-mo phase or while sliding across the floor but you are still basically just pointing at a target and firing. It's got none of the jumping around hack and slash flare of DMC. in fact I think I realised you can't jump at all? I wanted to get off a walkway to the ground in front of me, couldn't jump the barrier and had to skid back down the steps on my knees instead.

I played it through a few more times last night and with each repeat play it seemed to lose some of it's magic. I think when I found the sniper rifle, and then discovered how to resuscitate fallen comrades KZ2 style, I came to the conclusion that there isn't much different here at all.

Right now before I consider buying I think I'll be waiting for someone to crack the system and reveal the ingenious magic that lurks within.

I get the feeling that if you're hanging back and picking off enemies (as i have been myself) then you're missing half the cool melee stuff Mikami has implemented here.

That's what I mean though, the only cool stuff I can find is sliding and shooting at the same time. Or sliding and hitting someone. But then you are left in the middle of the enemies with no defences. Melee attacks are one hit automatic kills (just push the button when close to an enemy) and you can only do one attack every 30 seconds or something. It's not particularly cool in a gameplay sense.

If it's all about balletic and/or non-stop motion then why is there even a sniper rifle in there? Surely that goes against the whole ethos. I don't have a problem with not being able to jump in a shooter (love Killzone 2), but as this is apaprently supposed to be all about the movement then I would prefer a better sense of freedom and control around the environment.

At the moment I don't see what the special feature is - I think everyone is just assuming it's there but nobody has demonstrated what it actually is yet. Enlighten me!

I like it. Part Gears of War / Halo / Lost Planet

I'm not getting it on release, but will pick it up when it bombs to about £20-25*

              * unless I buckle before then!

Won't be long before it's down there I doubt.

I spent some time messing around with a couple of things in the demo.

Bonus points seem to be awarded for headshots, multiple kills, and speed.

Slowing time down seems to be just a convenience. Boosting into an area filled with enemies then evading and slowing time down before going for all headshots seems to be a great way to raise the score counter.

Helping friendly units that are in trouble will get you a weapon pickup. Stick with one weapon, don't use the others, and keep picking up their drops and you'll upgrade those weapons faster.

Boosting with EMP emitter = instant trigger. This is amazing to use when the gate opens in the demo and the rush of enemies start coming through.

Boost into the middle of them all and while boosting, press Y to fire off an instant EMP all around you. Throw a grenade, jump back, kill them all in a single go for big pointage.

When under cover, you have a 'cigarette count'. You can press LB while under cover to smoke a cigarette and throw it away, but can only do this 3 times. Am trying to find out if this links into some kind of style score, there must be a reason behind this surely?

I ended up finishing the demo with about 11,000 on the score counter. How's everybody else doing?

Played it last night and thought it was okay.

Was well dissapointed you could not jump of a ledge though, where is the sense in that? all this agile movement and you can't jump off a ledge.

I like the sniper rifle as I am a no scope freak. Quite satisfying to slide, slow mo and no scope someone in the head! I think it will be a ?17.99 job for me as fallout take my full price game for Oct.

I did Settle into the control system quite quickly but as others have said the melee system is rubbish. Is it too much to put just a little god hand close quarters in it?

Also, anyone here not give a damn about scores or points with these types of game?

i've been waiting for this for ages and microbloodyarsetwattshytes kick me in the nuts. racial discrimination of non gold members is a joke i will have to wait till next thursday the humanity of it all.

also does this game give like a rank for finishing the level. Because a score is just a number with no indication if its any good .

Agreed, it does seems like they have mixed a number of game together and come up with this. Which is no bad thing. I really enjoyed the demo but I felt it probably is going to be quite limited. I found the climbing a bit odd considering you have a jetpack zooming you around its not very easy to leap over things.

Not going to set the world on fire but an enjoyable game.

I loved it. It's exactly what I was hoping for: PN03 on roids!

One thing though, I couldn't get the cover system to work at all. Every time I was near cover and pressed the button I just did a mellee move instead and kept getting killed. Am I being thick?
Don't look at me, I'm irrelevant.

This frequent comparison to P.N.03 is becoming a major irk for me. It is not even close to being the same! That was a game in which you could not even move when you were firing, the majority of enemies rarely moved either and it was all about timing and patterns of fire.

The world was completely empty of other people as well so it was a very solitary experience, running around repetitive sterile environments.

I honestly can't imagine how the two could be any more different.

LOL, I was doing this last night - but then I was jet lagged to hell...think its cos the X button prompt is red while the button on the 360 pad that's red is for melee...still a bit tired tbh

Anyways, once you start using X for cover and stop trying to punch the crap out of walls and crates it makes much more sense
