Don't worry. It turns into one of the best games ever made. Well, the N64 version does anyway, and I presume the 3DS version is better still.

Thought all the zelda games were abit overrated to be honest.....

Except they aren't. You probably just don't enjoy the game style. Some are better than others though.

Zelda III is one of my top five games ever. I need to get my head around this one I think.
          Kept you waiting, huh?

In OoT they don't take the training wheels off for quite a while, tbh.

At least until you've rinsed the 2nd dungeon, I'd say.

Ehh... I'm playing through it now and my immediate feelings echo Goemon's on the previous page- I shouldn't have gone back. I loved it on the N64 but it was also a fresh and new take on Zelda back then and thrilling to explore. Now I just find the emptiness of Hyrule Field a little bit bland and annoying. Perhaps it's just me but I hate controlling this with the 3DS slide pad as well. It undoubtedly looks a lot nicer than it did but it feels like I should be playing it on a big screen with the "proper" controller.

I've been having exactly the same feelings about Starfox 64 3D as well. Maybe I'm just older and more cynical now.

Pity Barrie. I must admit I spend next to no time on Hyrule field anyway so the sparseness of it isn't an issue. As for Starfox, pure gold even now. Love the slide pad too.

Yeah, I'm probably just a bit set in my ways or have fallen prey to excessive nostalgia over the years. I turned off all of the 3D and gyroscope aiming guff as soon as possible, which is probably quite telling. They're still objectively good games but a little bit of their magic has disappeared for me.

For me Zelda is all about clever dungeons and Ocarina is still fantastic in that area. It certainly has issues but overall for me it is as wonderful as ever. A slightly better lock on would help but as said you can just shoot manually.

I never found OOT's hand-holding to be that obtrusive though. It still leaves you to mostly work things out for yourself just with a heads up on where to go next sort of thing.

The 3ds version is a great update and plays every bit as good now as it did upon the games original release on the N64.

Its simply a timeless classic, with an incredible ammount of charm, inventiveness and brilliant gameplay mechanics that still feel good to use to this day.

On the sparseness of the Hyrule Field, I think what is often forgotten is that it is not just the Hyrule Field and the dungeons - there are places in between and around all sides of the field. There probably isn't as much to find as there is in Link's Awakening (easily the best Zelda game) but there's still loads there and more than we ended up with on some later Zeldas - WW and PH just giving us mostly flat blue and Spirit Tracks achieving a similar thing with a train.

Yeah, except perceptions change over time and I'm not as bowled over by it as I once was when I first played it.

My perception of the game has never changed. I think it's a stunning game.

I find it amusing that people are complaining about there not being much going on in hyrule field. Its a field. It's basically just a hub to the rest of the world. If you're finding the field a chore to traverse then I would deffinitley not recommend playing latter zelda games. As Dogg Thang has already alluded too, latter games had a world map that were much more boring to traverse. Spend hours seemingly going no where in the boat in windwaker and you will see what I mean.

Also in agreement with Dogg Thang about links Awakening. Incredible game, especially considering the system it's on. My favorite Zelda game.
