Anyone pick up the "Instinct Edition"? the book it came with looks like someone screwed it up then had sex with it! Stains and all...I am hoping this is a design feature

Not played it though so sorry for this cool story...back tomorrow with impressions!

Playing this on the PC and already loving it.

The unscripted moments of comedy gold are great - in the middle of a firefight, both me and the pirates suddenly got ambushed by a hoard of hungry Komodo Dragons. After fending off the one that had taken a shine to my leg, I looked up in time to see a pirate shrieking like a banshee and legging it into the under growth, Komodo Dragon literally snapping at his heels.

His mates decided to stick around and try and finish me off. Once they were dispatched I headed off in the direction that the fleeing pirate and his new best friend had gone, not really expecting to see anything. Only to stumble across a very dead pirate a little way down the trail.

Then there are the moments where it makes you feel like an utter bad ass - low on ammo, rushing through the undergrowth, bursting out from cover and driving a machete through the chest of the nearest bloke before grabbing the shotgun off his still warm corpse and blasting his mate before he's even had a chance to turn around.

And all this sort of thing within the first hour.

It just throws so much at you once it takes the reigns off that it's a bit overwhelming. So many places to go, people and animals to kill and things to craft. After being badly disappointed by Hitman, this is shaping up to be every bit as good as the reviews said.

In my opinion you really can't declare a game "a classic" based only on a few hours of the beginning. I assume Far Cry 3 is a big game and more often than not the problem with big games is that they get tedious, repetitive and boring despite maybe seeming like the greatest thing ever at the surface.

Well there's such thing as an "instant classic", or so I have heard anyway.

You might call a film or a song an "instant classic" after seeing/hearing them, but a video game with content for at least 20+ hours is a whole different matter, you won't know if it'll hold up to the end if you've only scratched the surface. That's my opinion anyway.

I guess I had 4 hours or so before my post. 100% classic for me because the game world is so fluid and unpredictable and I can do so much outside of the quest. For example I just spent an hour driving a jet ski along the coast looking for good hunting spots. Jumping off and the stalking my prey with a sniper scoped bow. When you see a wild boar run past with a pack of dogs chasing it, followed by a tiger in persuit, it's hard for me not to conclude CLASSIC!

The missions so far have been imaginative and varied. One thing is for sure, the dev team loves games! Amazing visuals on PC and quite good on 360, this is a mighty fine game.

              Classic, classic classic.

I picked up a copy this morning but wont get a chance to play until monday at the earliest.

I'd be interested to hear about multiplayer, co-op and the map editor if anyone has a moment spare to share. I've heard good things about the single player so I am not too worried about what that has in store.

Pumped a fair few hours into this now and - so far - it's very, very good. I'm finding it hard to actually stop playing in fact, constantly giving myself an excuse to play just a little bit more (Oooh, there's a radio mast just over yonder, I'll just break the jamming signal and call it a day... oh, it's cleared more of the map? I'll just have a quick explore.. ahh, there's the animal I need to craft that upgrade I've been waiting for! etc).

Playing on the ol' Xbox which is clearly struggling with the engine, poor thing; it's rather framey with plenty of screen tear. Still looks stunning at times, though. Controls are very much typical Ubi FPS (for some reason every UbiSoft console FPS I ever play seems to have the same slightly spongey feel to it) and, for some reason, default to lowest sensitivity, but the button layout isn't entirely dissimilar to CoD making it easy to pick up straight away.

As mentioned above, there's plenty of emergent gameplay going on and it all feels terribly immersive - there's something about the hunting, skinning and crafting that fully pulls you into the game world. On top of that, it's frequently rewarding, always giving you something to do, with new areas to explore and it's generous with its XP-based unlocks too.

It's absolutely hooked its claws into me so far in a way that none of the other of this year's winter blockbusters have managed and has resulted in Nintendo Land and Mario U remaining cellophane-sealed.

Edit: I should add that this feels like Far Cry 2 would've been without the bits that narked me. I wanted to enjoy FC2 but the game always found ways to spoil the fun for me with its apparent hatred for the player.

Oh, and something else I forgot to say: this game does stealth very well. It all feels very natural and as you'd expect, erring just on the side of giving the player enough leniency to keep it satisfying. There's nothing better than cheesing it across an exposed area while an AI's back's turned, sliding into shrubbery just as a jeep full of his buddies rounds the corner and barely evading detection.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts too. So many `organic` moments that its hard not to be so enamoured with it. It's a game that just generates it's own little moments that are unique to you.

I mean, I've never been on a hang glider in real life but finding one in FC3 ended pretty much how I expected it would - lodged in a tree!

Any ps3 impressions yet? Really want to get this and to enjoy the experience. My Dell xps laptop will fail with it though and I won't pay MS for live anymore until they remove the ads.

i think its supposed to be the same as the xbox (probably with more screen tear/lower frame rate/ poor textures) The ps3 version of FC2 was technically awful

Does the PC version support the 360 controller?.. I might just plump for that version as MP doesn't really bother me with this.

You know you don't need to have an Xbox live subscription to play Far Cry 3?
