Not really grabbing me, only a couple of hours in and feel there is way too much inventory management, looking for plants etc., not my cup of tea. And as djtickle says, i really don't care about the character. 10/10 from EG, that guy must have smoking something when playing this.

I was sneaking into a base and I'd taken out all but one of the guards silenty, I was lurking near some bushes when I thought I heard a growl....
A tiger jumped out and me, I unloaded a whole Ak47 into it's face and it still killed me.
On my next attempt at the same base I took Capcom's Advice and ran up a road on a hill that overlooked the base, I zoomed in with my camera spying out the enemies and I switched to the Sniper to take out the alarm.
I heard a growl....
A tiger was sitting 8 feet from me, overlooking the base I had just reconned "Hahahah sucker" you are perfectly still. I aim my sniper rifle right in it's face and shoot. It gets and runs at me, I don't have time to switch to my other weapon or reload, it mauls me to death :/

Shotgun for animal control...especially the special shotgun you unlock a bit later...grenade launcher on Sharks is good too
The hunters quest where you have to kill
rabid dogs with an RPG only made me chuckle
I am loving this game. Proper timesink world...wether it be hunting animals, relics or having a knife throwing competition with some mouthy jerk! Some of the points others have made...
Potions aren't necessary...they DEFINITELY are if you aren't playing on easy! 'untouchable' and the ephedrine one have saved me more than once! Also animal repellant helps a great deal (especially If you snipe a bear cage in a base! more than once he has killed the gaurds then me if I forget to inject it!) Plus the hunters instinct one makes hunting the rare animals much less annoying. The diving one is a big help with underwater relics too.
Unlockable moves not used....That depends on your style. Going by Capcoms posts his style is the exact opposite to mine. I dont snipe anyone, tag them with the camera then sneak in and take them down like a ninja! All the added takedown moves make me a silent bad ass! So the skills he would need I would not and vice versa! Good to have the choice...Also taking the bases undetected gets you 1500xp instead of 500 (or 550 if they dont set the alarm off)
The character not being likeable...I kind of agree now. Early on I thought the scared, near useless guy was a good character but as you become a hardened killer it gets more fun to play but you like him less. I have the same problem with Breaking Bad, 2.5 seasons of loving Walts character then he starts turning into a dick so never finished S3!
Inventory management...At first its tricky but just hunt some animals, when its bigger you only have the problem of having to mash A at the shop to sell your tat! It won't ever fill up.
Negatives for me are
The drug/dream sections...too slow and annoying. Fighting the Ink Monster was so awful if it was most other games I would have quit and traded it in. Hopefully now I have just arrived on Island 2 they are no more. I also agree its odd to kill Vaas and have this faceless guy as the real villain Also didn't like being forced to do story missions to have new powers unlocked when I was happy doing side quests. Had 12 skill points sat there for ages wiuth nothing to use them on
My GOTY and nothing else even comes close. First time stealth in games has clicked too so I think I will have to give Dishonored a try next!Last edited by BaronSqwelch; 03-12-2012, 21:08.

Oh my... something happened tonight which made me feel terrible. I was having a bit of a bad spell, but it turned into one of the greatest / cruellest gaming moments ever.
It all started when I was swimming across a river when a croc grabbed me and took me for a death roll down to the bottom. Somehow I managed to break free and carve him up into the early stages of a new pair of shiny shoes. Blood soaked I crawled from the river and promptly got stamped to death by a Bison! How embarrassing.
So things weren't going well and were about to get just as crappy.
I re-spawned on top a mountain and had to make it down by quad, totally taking the descent too fast and rolling it over, totalling my ride.
To make things worst I'd ended up by the saw mills / logging area which constantly respawns with pirates and can't be taken over. Not wanting to face a fire fight with them after my recent spell of bad luck, I decided to skirt around the camp and along the road, resigned to the fact that I was in for a long walk to get anywhere...
Cue my delight as a civilian car comes pootling down down the road. I `flag down`, by which I really `point a bloody great big sniper rifle at`, the man and woman inside (I'm going to assume they were husband and wife) and commandeer their vehicle. They didn't look too pleased as I start to reverse away, getting reading to do a J-turn and leave them eating dust... and then it happened.
There was an almighty crash from the back of the car. Before I could spin the camera around to see what it was, several deer go pelting past the car, one of them in such a rush that it must have collided with the car. I don't have time to even think about what's happening as I hear the woman shout "OH NO!" just as a rather hungry Tiger burst right past the side window. Sensing it's scheduled lunch time snack of deer was getting away, the Tiger instantly turns its attention to the recently stranded husband and wife, mauling her dead without a second though and then, without missing a beat, perusing her screaming husband off into the under growth...
I actually sat here laughing and dumb struck at the same time. Again, totally unscripted and events that were of my own doing. Had I not flagged them down, the husband and wife would probably be still alive. But then I'd be the object of the Tigers attention instead. And probably dead as a result. I had, in a rather unsuspecting act of car-jacking, just sent two innocent islanders to their grisly death in a way that I couldn't have been forseen.
With little option but to drive away, I mused how this was clearly my GOTY, and I thought about how it would probably be fitting for me to just park their car at the nearest settlement as some sort of mark of respect. Because I wasn't paying attention to the road, I careered off it and wedged the car in some trees.
Oops!

Why does this remind me of FarCry 2 but instead of the tiger replace it with the AI in general. I was so tough and pixel perfect even with a shotgun from 100 meters away. Plus the stealth suit... wasn't... yes I realise its not active camo!
Lying still in the grass... guard coming... oh they can see me... how?!

There is a lot to like in the game, however the Xbox (or the engine) can't keep up. Its fine until you enter a firefight, then the framerate collapses and it becomes horrible.
Definately one of those games that was designed for a PC and then considered for consoles secondary I reckon.
It difficult to judge a game like this, I would imagine those running a PC will thing this is GOTY material. Console owners however will be a bit more grounded in their overall view.

I feel similar. If this had come out in a years time on new hardware I think it would have been amazing. As it is there is a great game in there yet the blur and general graphical trickery to hide some of its flaws some times gets in the way enough to make this feel like a benchmark to prove this generation has overstayed its welcome now.
I'm actually tempted to check it out on PC. On 360 its a very good game, but not great and simply because the hardware holds it back.

I was properly gob smacked when I first played it, this is what next gen consoles will look like, which on the one hand will be very nice, but on the other hand some will be disappointed with as in essence its just the same graphics but in 1080p in reality. (With some new effects admitedly)

There are sooooo many details in this game! The devs have hidden things all over the place. I was hunting a relic on the map, and there was a small opening, so I jumped down to get my reward, only I hadn't relaised it was a deep senote, and I proceeded to fall onto shelfs down maybe 200m until splashing down into the water. Looking up I could just see a small postage stamp of daylight. Below me was a small ruin, and the relic. This ended in a dead end.
What to do... what to do....
At this point I wondered if it was a glitch, a dead end or some forgotten part of the map with no exit, but I decided to do some duck dives and get a sense of my dark surroundings. On my third dive down I saw that the cave continued out to one side, tight, but certainly enough space to swim through. Back up to the surface and thankful that I had the extended breath skill, as I hadn't any extra breath potions handy, I made my dive.
The cave was winding and narrow, and after 30seconds I was committed. Not enough gas to return, just had to move ahead. Then after several twists and turns BANG. Dead end. What to do... what to do!!! Then it stuck me, think in 3D, what is above your head? It was dark, but the tunnel did continue, and after 10m more swimming I found myself in a small air chamber, with vine to climb. Up the vine and then I was in a side tunnel from a major river cave and a few short steps and I was in the sunlight.
Whoever spent that much time carefully desigining that section of cave, that would be easily missed by 9/10 people in the game, THANK YOU! That was a powerful and exciting bit of gaming.
I also might add, that playing on Easy is perfect for me, as I find the AI balance just right for my play style and patience.

Sounds like a really promising entry into the franchise. An FPS for the players that don't play shooters so much as it includes so much more.
The game has flaws for sure, I think EB has posted some good examples of dodgy AI or unfair AI at least.
But when you get hold of something that really "Connects" it is easy to ignore the flaws. I feel empathy with the EuroGamer reviewer, and after 15 hours I also would give this a 10. It's hard to explain, but if you really like FPS games, but really detest "Corridor shooters", and love the option to explore & build you character, the game just connects.
I am seriously considering using ?700 on a new PC for this game, to replay it with "Ultra settings", as it really is that good a match for me, and to be perfectly honest its so long since a game has captured my imagination that I think the money will be well spent.
The MAP is just massive, and once I have come to the end of the campaign, I look forward to just taking a boat or ATV for a spin and exploring. Just the hunting alone has enough replay value for me. Stalking and hunting is great fun, and very relaxing. Cave exploration, diving on the wrecks, car racing, hand gliding, Medic runs.... it's just one big world of fun perfectly tuned for my tastes.
Thus, for me, I am just lapping up every detail, laughing at every AI incident and for the first time in 2012, having a real blast with a video game. I just wish there was an open world coop mod.

I couldn't really see a giant difference when I loaded it up on PC last night, the Motion Blur Effects benefit from being in 1080p and the SSAO us far more natural compared to the creepy black dust of the 360 version.
I had to crank it up to ULTRA before I felt I saw any discernible difference in the quality of the graphics beyond the frame rate and resolution.
Which for people with the option, is defiantly the way to go, going 1080p certainly makes it look nicer but I wouldn't describe it as any kind of generational leap myself.
Crysis still looks better than this does, whether its the PC/360 version and even then the difference between the lower and higher graphics settings is far more noticeable.
My bad experiences with AI or random encounters has become more tolerable now I've levelled up myself a bit and realised there is a quick save option. Even then I still feel the actual gunplay isn't quite as enjoyable as it could be. Whether this is the framerate playing havoc of whether its me not being as familiar with the 'Aim Down Sights' autoaim snap, perhaps it's a bit if both.Last edited by EvilBoris; 04-12-2012, 15:53.
