Tell me more about this - I am intrigued.

On the plus side, I was impressed how, when controlling the daughter at the start, she would place her hand on a work surface if you stopped besides it.

I'm all about the small details.

The only thing wrong with the ocean wave animation generally is that it moves a lot faster than in real life. Check the waves 'lapping' on the shore. Looks like its on fast forward. Freaked me out. Is that nitpicking?

During the Xbox One presentation (before E3) CoD developers highlighted submarine stages where you would swim near fishes and those would scatter away thanks to their AI. Truly the highlight of the whole show.

Some wag posted a comparison video with the state-of-the-art evasive fish AI in Mario 64, didn't they?

These are possibly the most anal complaints of something in a game I've ever read.

I officially do not like this game.

It was great, up until the upside down bit. Very mild spoiler: [HIDE]I had been saving ammo so cautiously up until this point, and suddenly BAM! Infinite ammo. What an immersion breaking cop-out. They didn't even pretend to hide this fact. It was just: limited resources, limited resources, oh, we want a shooty bit now, INFINITE RESOURCES!!!!![/HIDE]

I mean, FFS, couldn't they have, I dunno, invented some kind of story explanation for how that's possible? Utterly ridiculous.

Also, guns in general suck. It doesn't matter whether it's people, zombies, or random bins, all of them take so many hits to topple it's just not worth it. Seriously, the guns are useless. I never bother using them and have a ton of ammo now.

The zombies I can understand. They're tough. But people should crumble more easily when SHOT IN THE FACE. How is it human enemies can take THREE hits in the face... WITH A MAGNUM!?

I Am Alive was much better. All enemies dropped with one shot from the gun (I played through on hard mode), and they were actually frightened of guns. I liked the AI in that. It felt like a proper survival game. With The Last of Us, it often degenerates into Benny Hill style running around nonsense.

              This is ****.

              EDIT:
You know what's good? Metro's ranger mode, where both you and enemies die almost instantly from gunshot wounds.

Also, State of Decay on 360.

              EDIT2:
              Ugh, bored now.

Alone in the Dark on PS3 was much better. The crafting was more versatile - you could combine anything to make anything. Even rubbish, like an empty water bottle, sticky tape and a flare. Now that's cool.

Also, the combat was more fun. I'm playing this, and I keep thinking: I'd rather be playing AitD.

I forgot to add, for those who really, really enjoyed the sneaking and stealth aspect of this game you should check out Batman: Arkham Asylum/City.

You do realise you're complaining about the game for actually being well made and fair? If you didn't have any ammo during the upside down bit it would be impossible to progress. No game designer worth their salt would sacrifice the players ability to complete the game for the sake of immersion.

Every post you make these days seems to be a complaint about how a game is not realistic enough. When did you stop being a videogame fan and decided you would rather take part in a real apocalypse?

You miss my point. The game is not well made. It's lazily made. Really, REALLY lazily made.

                      Here's a solution I made up in 10 seconds:
Ellie and Joel find a backpack with nothing but ammo in it, but before they can count it, Joel ends up upside down. Uh oh, now he has to use all that ammo!

I dunno, Moxon. You know what would have been better than what they did? Anything. That's what.

It's like someone in a game is allergic to water. And the game makes a really big ****ing song and dance about how this guy is allergic to water. But you know what? Jetskis are cool, so let's just ignore that little rule for a moment to have a big jetski section.

It's not about realism, it's about the designers being internally consistent. Or at least inconsistent in a logical way. The problem when you create a game that strives for visual realism, is that when it does not make sense, the lack of realism is more noticeable. Lack of realism in Little Big Planet doesn't bother me, because it's a game about toys running around a made-up landscape. It's meant to break all the rules.

Most importantly though, Rmoxon, let me educate you on something important.

Now, I'm a literary man. I'm an author; a writer of books. So I know about these things, and I don't expect you to Rmoxon, because hey, you're not a writer like me. But let me share something with you, that us writers know about. Right...

It's called a Deus Ex Machina. And it's employed when a writer does a bad ****ing job. You paint your character into a situation and then suddenly, as if from god, a machination appears which solves the problem. A special item someone forgot they had, or a skill they neglected to mention earlier (like flying), or nanomachines, or a gun with infinite ammo.

The solution to this problem is not removing the upside down section.

The solution is not using the player's actual ammo, thereby making the game unwinnable.

It's about intelligent structure and not being an idiot when designing your game. NaughtyDog are clearly idiots.

If it did use the player's actual ammo, the game could perhaps generate only enough zombies so that the player can feasibly kill them. Or alternatively Ellie could throw Joel some ammo like in the regular game. Or perhaps Joel's buddy, who lives in that town, could make a heroic entrance if the player runs out of ammo. In such a case it would not be a Deus Ex machine, because the past hour had all been about meeting this friend - so this would be as good a time as any to introduce him.

I bet if I sat here all day I could come up with 10 or maybe 20 infinitely better solutions.

But no. SPACE MAGIC is employed, to temporarily give Joel a gun with infinite ammo.

It is the laziest, most ****ing pathetic example of game design I have seen in years.

How the hell does anyone put up with this ****? Seriously. It's just stupid.

                      ---

Regarding where I am now, I'm just past the car ambush. I cleared out the library, which was ****. The guns are useless. Three shotgun blasts to the face to take down an enemy? WHAT THE HELL? Also, the structural puzzles with the planks and stuff were better done in Alone in the Dark (PS3). The ending to that was terrible, but if anyone here is wondering what kind of game I actually like, it's Alone in the Dark. You've got item crafting, healing yourself, really good combat, structural puzzles (using physics, and fire!), dynamic environments, and unearthly enemies.

I only realise it while playing The Last of Us, but Alone in the Dark did everything that I hoped this game was going to do. It sort of does it, but really badly. AitD for PS3 is about 99p on eBay, I challenge someone to play it concurrently with this and post their thoughts in an alternative topic.

Sketcz: Ellie keeps sourcing ammo for you throughout that episode, as long as you keep her alive. Granted you might've panicked and failed to realize what was going on. Anyway it makes for some really nice gameplay tension, especially when you venture off the default difficulty, and is much more elegant than your "hey we just found a bottomless bag of ammo" idea. To call this a 'REALLY lazily made game" is the most asinine, transparent trollbait I've ever read.

edit: your "I'm a writer" so I know what's what was just embarrassing, really. Please stop it.

You've missed the argument. I like the fact Ellie sources stuff, she's one of the most useful AI partners I've seen in a game. Proper useful.

My complaint is the infinite ammo gun you get, at the upside down section. It doesn't make any sense.

I think we're on the same page. Basically, I said that instead of a magic gun, it would have been better to use Ellie at that section. Instead of, you know, SPACE MAGIC. Which is just dumb.

As for the "I'm a writer thing" - I saw JK Rowling do that in an interview once, and found it super annoying. I was just trolling Moxy with JK's material.

I might do the Sketcz challenge.

I have AitD, but never played it. I might play that and try TLoU afterwards.

                              What do I win?

Right, that's enough playing and writing about games you don't like and focus on packing for Japan. I don't want to hear about you having to wear your pants inside out because you didn't pack enough!

Weak gunplay is a naughty dog trade mark, it annoyed the hell out of me on uncharted.
