You need to go back to the Hunter's Dream and speak to the doll. She only wakes up and lets you level up after you've been to a specific place, though.

You need to enter the Cleric Beast area. You don't need to beat it. Even if it kills you, you go back to the Hunter's Dream. You get the beckoning bell for summoning too.

You need at least 1 Insight to see the doll jump into life. You earn Insight by, consuming itens like Madman's Knowledge, entering boss/fog area, killing bosses, enterting soime areas, etc.
Since you are still at the beginning, you can either, iirc, jump into the sewer area and pick up a Madman's Knowledge or pick one of the bosses, the one at the bridge or father g.

Stuck on that bloody spider boss! Whenever one of the small spiders jump on me it's instant death. I can deal with the magic boulders, unless they all hit me at once then it's instant death again. But I can dodge most of those. Should I upgrade any stat or put on any particular armour which will prevent insta death? It's so cheap! I made 5 Co Op games and all my Co Op partners get killed too. Sigh.

I have finished the game, but the Spider Boss for me is the most annoying due to his spiders surrounding him , i must have spent a fair few hours on this boss, for me its the hardest by far, what i did was try to lure soom of the spiders away, then do no more that 1 combo on it, then roll away, let you stamina gain, and go again, dont try to get to many hits in on one go or the spiders will finish you.
having said that i swear when i got it done it was luck, i got him down to a little life bar 2 or 3 times , then died. i almost gave up on the game at this boss.

Try luring them away and then sprinting back in, hacking away then backing off. I found flame paper gave a nice damage boost as well.

one hit form a little spider sounds like your under levelled, what is you health at? i was about 20 on that stat when i fought him and could take about 2-3 hits.

armour and runes play a big part too so make sure you have the right ones on health and defence ones are the best early on, If you have the flame sprayer you can burn him pretty fast, get rid of the spiders, walk right up to him stand about mid boddy and just burn away you can get about half his energy off this way, then use fire paper to finish him off, stay midrange and watch out when he rolls on his back as he will do a big aof attack,

He's also weak to bolt damage to so the Tonitrus works wonders on those spiders, don't attack anything head on watch out for the magic and stay to his side and you should be fine, you also dont need to kill all the spiders just enough so you dont get swamped.

Thanks for the advice, I found the Madman's Knowledge and also stumbled across 2 bosses. Didnt manage to kill any of them first time but spent the time after leveling up a little bit and building up my items to go back to the bridge and give it another go

Just had a thought. I want to see all the endings...

Can I back up my save before the end and just reload that save to see the endings??

                      Yes. Yes you can...

Easy way to get the endings done on the same run!

Well, after some careful deliberation I'm now the owner of a ?69.99 copy of the nightmare edition courtesy of grainger games. Do I really need a quill and ink set? Not especially, no, but there we have it.

Any tips for a newbie? I understand its more accessible for those who disliked the souls games, but I don't like the idea of losing hours of work on each death. I'm happy with grinding and farming though if it makes progression more manageable

You'll never lose hours of work mate. No reason to ever lose more than 5 minutes really, e.g. You spend an hour slowly crawling through an area killing everything and searching everywhere and the oh noes! You died! Back to the start but this time you just run past everything to the area where you died and reclaim your blood echoes. Even if you can't run past absolutely everything you'll still be able to kill everythign quicker as you'll know where everythign spawns. Or you can kill everythign again, building up more echoes and then eventually claim the last lot again.

yeah you only ever loose blood echoes, as all the items you pick up stay with you, even in death. also once a boss is killed it stays dead too, so as brad said there really isn't any reason you should be loosing hours of progress.

good to hear. In regards to these echoes, is there a limit to how many you can get in the first area? I see myself spending a good deal of time there XD

Nope, no limit but assuming you are spending them on levelling you'll soon realise you won't be getting enough on one run to level up. I don't know what level that'd be though.

I'm not getting many chances to play but every bit of time I do I spend on this. Be it as little as 10 minutes, any progression feels like progression. There's a real great sense of reward in this game.

I never made it far in either Demon's Souls or Dark Souls and frankly didn't have the patiences for the slow paced battles.

Just defeated BSB and now trying to figure out what next.
