My mum wouldn't let me purchase Mortal Kombat or Doom, even when I was 16.

If she saw me playing on it, or found it in my room, it was chucked out. Simple as that.

I hated her with a passion for it at the time. But looking back at things now several years on, I am very grateful to her. I don't miss those games one bit. I feel I am a well rounded individual now.

    Something must have been right!

I'm 33 now, don't think we even had age ratings when I was a kid

Lol! I can't remember the age ratings either.

I just remember that if my parents didn't like the game, it didn't get played.

I remember not being allowed to play Altered Beast when I brought it home from a mate's house! lol

things have changed a lot but then again maybe games got so violent and started to create so much evil youth that it had to get a rating system

**Old Man Butts in** Yeah, whatever happened to good old fashioned entertainment like Corry!?

            The irony.

Electronic social interaction is worse for your kids' welbeing than some vacuous soap that glorifies the sort of behaviour, attitudes and moral sensibilities of your average Jerry Springer guest.

            Yes. That makes perfect sense.

I've also got a friend (he's proper rich) who has his own video editing studio etc who could possibly convert it to DVD format for those from foreign climbs-but i'll have to ask.
I can do the same if anyone wants an NTSC DVD. I'll be recording this tonight and post it online if I can find space and bandwidth. How long is it going to be?

Although I could tell my mum didn't like me playing games with high age ratings, she didn't stop me (but she did ask about the content). I think I got Quake (BBFC 15) when I was 10 or so and C&C Red Alert (ELSPA 18 ) when I was 12... I can't think of anything harmful in these games.

GTA seems different though. I haven't had a good enough time playing any of them to say for sure (in fact I found them very mediocre from what I did play) but the character designs on the box art are sleek and mature looking. I can see why that and the whole "fast cars" theme appeals to younger males who want to act mature and testosteroney (as 9/10 of them do at that age).

Anyone remember Ice-T vs Sherriff Navaro? **** the Police became a massive tune. Of course, rap music was hit hard, being accused of being the source of all societies ills.
**** the Police was by NWA, and rightly caused a bit of a stir. The Ice-T track was Cop Killer, which despite actually being a rock track made by his Body Count 'band', was continuously used to slate hip-hop music for years after.

That's like calling Puzzle Bobble an RPG, and blaming it for the creation of random encounters!!

The mainstream media really are a bunch of misinformed wankers without the slightest clue of anything they write about./rant

I had Barbarian II on my C64 when I was 12.

In it, your player could come to many a sticky end. In one instance, your head is removed with a swift bite from a monster known as a Saurian Beast(!).

I remember deliberately showing my mum that particular death; her reaction? Hmm.. that's not very nice, is it?

Games were a lot less graphically sophisticated in those days, so I guess her apparent indifference was more to do with that.

Dear oh dear. Have you seen the editing and skewed angle this programme is taking already?

Investigative journalism my arse. Brass Eye ahoy more like.

are ITV guilty of supplying GTA Vice City to under age people? I'd sue them tbh! they're letting kids play it! ;p
