Looking at all 3 consoles, the xbox does have the weakest 2003 line up with less exclusives (well promising ones anyway), and a large emphasis on PC ports. Like numerous people have said before, this doesnt bother me as there are plenty of other titles to play this year, and I would just be happy with Moto GP2 this year (and maybe Spikeout if we are lucky).

Xbox's 2003 line-up... a bit crap?

I'm sure Xbox has its merits (the emulation scene etc, that sounds very attractive to me), but it just didn't seem to be for me. I had a PAL Xbox and over the 3-4 month period that I had it, I ended up getting about 4 games and the only one I seriously enjoyed was Halo. Most of the games were lacking the kind of charm that I want to find in console games - the bright colors, etc. Halo 2 looks awesome and I still miss knocking people on the back of the head with a big chunky weapon, but I'm still glad I sold it.

Xbox has the best racing games though.
I can't possibly understand how anyone could choose Xbox over PS2 with regards to racing games.
GT3 is better than Sega GT 2002 by an abolute gulf, Project Gotham is a gimmick racer which doesn't seem to know what it wants to acheive, Apex is a nice idea implemented badly, Wreckless is frankly criminal in its tedium, Mercedes Benz is not bad, but the length of the tracks means you'll never master them properly, Rallisport has a nasty handling model and is easily eclipsed by CMR3.
Not that it hasn't got some great racers. Quantum Redshift is surprisngly lovely, despite its bland styling and Moto GP is an amazing racer which manages to pull off the half-sim/half-arcade trick where so many others have failed before and will almost certainly go even further with the sequel.
But as a racing fan, if you want the very best you have to go with PlayStation 2.

It's all a case of horses for courses these days. There are so many multiplatform releases that picking a console comes down to making a few choices. Xbox in 2003 is currently is no worse a choice than any other. It just comes down to personal taste and the tide swings between the three every three months or so dependent on key releases.
I know many here are speaking from a really specific viewpoint in regard to which racers etc are better than the other etc, but this is a really microcosmic view in reagrd to the whole software picture. So what if a specific racer isn't at the very pinnacle of play mechanics, there are bound to be other worthy qaulities that make a title fun.
Personally my Xbox has had a great 2003 and has had more play wrung out of it than either my PS2 or GC, hence my Xbox-defense against the topics key statement. But as I said it's horses for courses.

I don't consider Gran Turismo 3 to be a great racing game. It's a fantastic driving game for people who are really into cars and love all the tweaking and specs, but as a competitive racer I don't think much of it, except the rally bits. The sense of speed isn't too hot.
And Burai I agree with you on most games, Quantum Redshift is paticularly over-rated... the course designs are rank. I just love Project Gotham and Moto GP because they get the mix between arcade/realism just right. I was a big fan of MSR on the Dreamcast for this reason, too.

As long as some good games are coming, then I don't care.
Homebrew would be a killer app on any system and the reason why the Xbox is the best system around. I don't give a **** what Microsoft do so long as Halo 2 comes out in the next 12 months.
Oh and i'll take racing around Sega GT 2002's tracks whilst listening to magical sound shower with the pad (best for racers by far) over GT3's boring circuits, wank music and inadequete pad.

The ability to use a nice pad and listen to Outrun soundtracks whilst you drive is no substitute for a quality game. Give me a GT3 Supra GT on Laguna Seca over any of Sega GT 2002's boredom-fests any day

And that's the problem, I think. I look at my shelf and I see games like DOA3, Halo, Panzer Dragoon, MotoGP, Gunvalkyrie (and if I had a bigger shelf, Tekki would be there too) - games of such amazing technical and creative excellence - and it seems like such a waste that the only thing to get me excited in the near-future is the ability to play the games I was playing 10 years ago.

You've listed 6 top exclusives there, and I would add a couple more - not bad for a first year which felt very barren between launch and christmas. To be fair, xbox's 2003 is only looking sparse in comparison because Nintendo have such a stellar line-up, so many of their own franchises pencilled-in for 2003 (although I wonder how many might slip to 2004?) But there's still a good few potential xbox classics I am looking foward to anyway, so whilst my GC is likely to get the most play this year, it's hardly a disaster for the big black monster. KotOR alone, going on Bioware's standards, is probably going to last me at least a couple of months
And on the side-note of driving games, my vote remains withGotham
