It's a potential security hole from the sounds of it.

That said, the fact that the machine is so Live-orientated is enough for me to decide not to bother already.

It is a surprsing list with some very notable ommisions and some games where the really do wonder if the developers thought "ok today we do the emulation driver for Barbie Horse Adventure".

I'm thinking what's happened is they've created a bare bones emulator to start with and just thrown every game at it to see what works. Over time, they will modify and add further drivers for the games that have complex emulation issues.

I know for some people backwards compatibility isn't an issue but it is to me. Sure I will still have my Xbox but space will be at a premium (arlready my setup can only have either the GC or Xbox setup at once) so I will need to box up the XB when 360 arrives. It would have been nice to have still been able to go through my Xbox catalogue on the new console, but over half my Xbox library aren't on that list.

        That sounds most likely.

The newest update of the XBox XDK actually allows developers to automatically add 360 support to new XBox titles, I hear.

It would be nice to have no region coding problem on XBOX 360 so I can play PES 5 on US XBOX 360 with a better joypad if I want to.

Would I be right in thinking the absense of games such as Burnout and more recent Fifa games is more to do with the fact that they'll be availible as 360 titles and so they don't want people to be able to play the xbox originals as they'd rather ppl forked out again for em on 360. Well that seems to be the most obvious reason for ommiting some of them.

That would certainly be the EA thing to do.

So the question that beckons to be asked is, do the developers have the final say in whether their game is made backwards compatible?

Download via Live, download on a PC and put onto a CD-R, take your memory card to a 360 pod or a mate's house.

It wouldn't strike me as too suprising if they wanted to give people the extra shove to buy the new 360 update of their latest game, that's all.

C'mon, you know what I'm getting at.

Mate, it was what was 100% personal to me.

I only went on Xbox live for SF Anniversary but since getting banned on Xbox live using my modded Xbox, I resisted the temptation getting another Xbox and pre-ordered an Xbox 360 hoping I could play SF Anniversary on that instead but so far it's not to be...

I dont know how this can be anything less than good news. Sure there are some omissions but as a first release list its more than I expected and 720P/1080i and FSAA is really going to clean up some of those titles visually.

They've mentioned having a dedicated forum on xbox.com for people to reply and possibly vote for the next games to work on so if you're disappointed one of your favourite games isnt there I suggest you make your voice heard.

Im betting there will be another 200 games added to that list in coming months as well. Good to see some of my most played Xbox LIVE titles are there (Forza, Halo2, GR2) and Halflife2 which I think I will rent and play through in 720P once my Xbox360 arrives.

That is only the US list anyway, so it doesn't apply to us. Expect the EU one to be slightly different and the JPN one to be even more different. They will all be merged at some point

Its not the US list... Pro Evolution Soccer 5 is on there!

Heres a good read, last two questions of an interview I found:

                                Q & A: Backward Compatibility

Xbox.com: By what date do you plan to have all original Xbox games backward compatible?

Todd: We're continuing to work hard to certify as many original Xbox games to work on Xbox 360 as possible; we'll be adding to the list regularly.

Xbox.com: What criteria do you use in choosing which Xbox games will be backward compatible on Xbox 360? How far back into the Xbox game library are you going to go?

Todd: When we say Xbox library, we mean the entire Xbox library. This ranges all the way from our launch in 2001 up to games that haven't even shipped yet. As we've said before, we prioritized the top-selling titles and those games with a large Xbox Live following for launch, and we're going deeper into the portfolio every day.

Xbox.com: Can you tell us whether we can play localized Xbox games on Xbox 360?

Todd: All games are still region encoded and can only be played in their native regions.
