At the end of the day it is down to personal preference, but when you turn it down to -50 you are getting exactly what SKYHD are sending you, not an image your TV is tampering with.

Andrew's VGA settings (contrast 100, brightness 38, backlight own preference) looked much better.

I still don't get the whole set sharpness to -50 thing but keep hearing people recommend it on various forums. When I had my SkyHD box hooked up to a CRT TV via a £130 Chord Company RGB cable, Sky's on-screen TV guide looked clean, crisp and pretty much perfect. Now it's hooked up to my WLT68 through a QED HDMI cable, the TV guide, with sharpness set to 0, looks noisy and out of focus, and sliding the sharpness down to -50 just makes it look even more blurry.

If you don't like how the sharpness looks, really, just set it how you like it. There are obviously 'correct' settings, but the bottom line is that it has to look nice to you.

Yeah. I reckon I need to stop moaning about it too, and face the fact that in order to for a screen to display HD stuff in all it's glory, SD output must suffer.

Can anyone tell me of any issue running a 360 through the VGA at connection at WXGA resolution (1380 x 768 I believe) as my 360 won't go to the dashboard at this setting. It freezes on the boot screen! It runs perfectly well through every other connection though. Have just sent 45 minutes on the phone to MS and apparently there's no way to "hard reset" the AV settings on the 360! that just seems a bit daft to me.

The only thing they could suggest was waiting for the next update but couldn't tell me when that will be.

If it helps I have a Sharp Aquos LC32GA6E.

            Many thanks.

Huzzah! MS have just called me back and it's all working!

Probably I bit late now, but did they tell you to hold L+R and press Y?
Thats how you reset the VGA resoltutions.

Ok, just done some testing with the latest update there.

WLT68 owners should be using the intermediate reference level, not expanded, with Contrast 100, Brightness 47 and backlight of 2 for dark room viewing. (as it's now using the full range, the backlight can be a lot lower to have the same overall light output)

Yeah, I found the intermediate setting looks best too. As I just mentioned in the update thread though, the new settings don't seem to do anything that couldn't be achieved by adjusting the WLT68's backlight, contrast and brightness settings.

There is some difference, but it really is pretty minor.

My guess is that the X3030D is pretty similar to the WLT68, so you'll be wanting it on Intermediate with contrast maxed. To set brightness, set the 360 to 1280x768, and put it into "Normal" mode so there are black bars on the sides.

Put this image on a thumbdrive, iPod etc (anything the 360 can load an image from) and view the screen at a sharp angle. Turn turn up the brightness and then turn it down slowly until the black boxes completely merge into the black bars at the side.

Backlight is how you adjust how bright the picture is overall, and really has to be set based on how bright your room is and your preferences.

Anyone know how similar to the Toshiba WLT66 this set is? I don't think I have the 'reference level' setting.

Reference level is the new settings Microsoft has added with the latest dash update. My guess is that the '66 is pretty similar.

My TV doesn't support 1280x720 through VGA, yet it does support 1360x768. Is this normal? Via component it does support 720p and 1080i. I wondered if VGA 1280x720 looks better on my TV as well...

My TV is a Samsung LE27T51, an oldie.
