    What you've been missing..

How many times have you given up on a game, only to find out that perhaps you didnt give it a real chance, and ended up missing out on something special?

The idea of this thread is for you to say what you have retired recently, and why, for others to comment on whether or not you are missing out on a decent game or not. Hopefully, a few of us might pick up from where we left off based on others recommendations.

Thats the gist of it anyways, lets see how it goes

    My Retired List

    Ghost Recon (Xbox360)
I found it really hard to get into, I didnt find the control method intuitive and expect this to be a rainy day game I play when Ive tired of the more accessible titles I have. Got to the part where I was told to abort the mission to get Ramirez, and go for the President. Yes, pretty much 20 mins ofter the game started..

    Burnout 360
A good game but... having done 90% of the Xbox version I just couldnt bring myself to plough through the Xbox one. I didnt see anything much in it to warrant a 2nd playthrough, I completed about 15% of the game overall.

Dead Or Alive 4 (Xbox 360)
This quickly joined the other DOA games as the title I use to demonstrate the 360/HDef to other people, it looks glorious, but didnt captivate me. I think what did it was the ridiculous, cheating boss battle, how many times did I try to take that thing out and end up giving up in frustration as it beat me by a fraction of health yet again. I completed it about 4 times with different characters, and havent touched it since.

I stopped playing Oblivion for a few minutes this past week. I suppose I could start playing it more. :P

Seriously... hmm, I don't think I can give any recent games a go at the moment considering my gaming time is taken up with you know what. I didn't give Psychonauts more than 4 hours - I wanted to, but the audio was skipping on my Xbox, presumably down to a dodgy disc drive (tried two copies), so I left it as I didn't want to spoil the rest of the experience of what up to then had been an outstanding game.

I mean to get back to it later this year when I get hold of a new (or sealed) Xbox for cheaper than present.

you really want to try ghost recon again pal - once you get the moves sussed and realise that its not quite like other games and that you have to take your time - it plays out well and its great watching your team get extracted at the end of a level

as for dead or alive - the game sucks

there isnt a block button any more and no matter how hard you try if the game wants to beat you, its just worth giving up

i really like dead or alive games especially all of them prior to the xbox release

i did manage to perfect the boss - on the rare occasion i got that far

Wash your mouth out Buster; DoA4 does not suck!

Marcus; you really ought to play Burnout on Live. I've barely touched the single player game because whenever I try to, I feel like I should be playing it on Live instead. It's aces.

Funny you should mention this as the game I seem to be missing is Oblivion.

I read the First play thread here and people seem to be having fascinating events take place with lots of interesting quests. People in my FFXI linkshell euligise on its greatness on a daily basis, recounting tales of their adventures. Even my brother seems engrossed talking about joining the Thieves Guild and closing gates as if I am supposed to have a clue what that means.

I can't seem to find anything to do in the game. Been playing for about 4-5 hours and outside of the main

          find the king's lost son

quest I have picked up only one more and ccan't seem to find anything else. :/

Well to put it into context, at the moment I've got 20+ 'active quests' on the go out of what seems to be at least a few hundred. Then you've got dozens of things to do that aren't quest-related that you can involve yourself in

Metroid Prime 1 + 2: I love the GBA Metroids etc but this one did not capture me at all, all this scanning crap is mainly what put me off. Not to mention the often dark visuals some points where I could not see so I had to put contrast/brightness to 100% on my tv.

Beyond Good and Evil: Loved this game on the Gamecube, got to a certain point where I kept dying or didnt know what to do or something so gave up and sold it, got it again on Xbox, went right through it in a couple days and loved it. Absolutely magical.

Halo: This game just doesnt grab me, I tried playing it and got past the first level, and it just bores me, running around 100M, shooting some little monsters that sound like kids, running some more. Multiplayer is fun, but single player just doesn't feel that good IMO.

                Far too many to mention.

I've stopped playing Oblivion for now to give Outrun 2006 and Under Defeat some more time.

I'm only 8 hours through Resident Evil 4 before I stopped playing it. Haven't played it since.

                Guild Wars.

                Ghost Recon.

Gotta say I agree with Jason here, I absolutly love DOA1,2&3 but for some reason really didn't like this one

I stopped playing Magna Carta (26hrs playtime) when the 360 arrived, and even though I enjoyed it i'm not sure if there's much to make me go back

i've given up on loads of things this year...most of which i really do want to go back to.

                    Dragon Quest VIII
got up to the bit where you

use the mirror to fight dolmagus

but instead of doing that, i went off exploring. Visited every bit of the map i could and spent ages leveling up. then a bunch of other games came along and i couldnt be bothered to get back into the quest, despite loving it up to that point. and i really do want to finish it.

                    Tourist Trophy
i know a lot of people hate this, but i did quite like it. the problem is i know nothing about motor bikes, and cant be bothered to keep selecting bikes to try and find out which races i can use them in. if there was a guide that told you which bike was best for which section i would go back and blast through it, as i did like driving the bikes.

                    Sega Rally 2006
well this one is a bit crap, but i deffinately didnt get my moneys worth with the amount of time i put into it. so i feel like i should go back, but pretty sure that i never will.

                    DJ Max Portable
i was interested in this when i first heard of it, but then there was a short time when it seemed difficult to get hold of, which made me want it even more. Now i have it i realise its a million times too hard for me. another one i would love to go back to, but in all likelyhood will never be out of its case again.

Here's a couple of the games I have in "retirement"

                        ICO
Took me about 3 years to play it in the first place, but I eventually tried it, loved it, then got stuck on one of the puzzles. Haven't played it since. I haven't played SOTC yet either since I feel I should complete this first.

                        Metroid Prime
Bought this at launch, along with a USA machine since I only had a JPN one at the time, but I sold the console to a mate a couple of weeks later. Haven't played it since, or touched the sequel for obvious reasons.

There's a load more like this, but the funny thing is that I actually like the games, so I didn't stop playing them because I don't rate them. I just never have the time/attention span to go through a "big" game from start to finish without playing other stuff inbetween.

My main one is PGR3. I had been going through getting gold medals fairly easily but I've given up on the Nordschleife tracks. It's not that I can't get any further, it's that I can't be bothered. Might spend more time on it if I got live but otherwise I'm done with it. I'm pretty sick of the driving genre in general at the moment and apart from vastly better graphics it's not giving me anything more than PGR2 did. It'd take something amazing for me to buy a driving game in the next 18 months.

Animal Crossing. If you get out of stride you start to fear going back incase Nook thinks you're dead for not coming out of your house for a few days, and then the town guards bury you alive, all your little animal friends hold a funeral where blathers gives a speech about the fun times of when you donated a fish that was already donated... by you! Then you turn on the game, and come out of the grave and scare the living daylights out of K.K.Slider who falls off the stage in shock and dies, and you were the only one down there so the police blame you and you run off to a friends village and its just not. worth. the. risk.
