Quick question: I understand if you buy a machine in the US and it breaks MS will sort it for you, regardless of what region it is (I made a thread about it a few weeks back).

But if you contact them saying there's a problem, will they make you send it to MS in the States or in the UK?

Gah it seems a lot of people are ending up with scratched Forza 2 discs if the Forza forums are anything to go by. No idea what to do now. Don't want the hassle of sending my console off if the fault is with the disc. Then again, even if the disc is slightly unbalanced, the insides of a 360 surely shouldn't be quite so hostile?

      Gah bugger bugger.

From reports I've read in the past, you send it to MS UK, but if you get sent a replacement, it's likely to be a PAL machine. Some people have even been lied to about the region of console they would get back. Despite arranging for a US NTSC replacement, they send a PAL machine.

Maybe someone with direct experience can give you a fuller/more up-to-date picture

Cheers for that Mono. That sounds a bit out of line really =/

Maybe I'll wait till I get back from the States to get a 360...

My vote can be changed from no problems to 2nd machine now!
After getting the 360 last may, I only had a couple of freezes of GRAW online that I remember (6+months ago), then yesterday after a couple of hours on GoW I got the frozen screen and display bug (lines up screen) and knew it was bad!
Every time I turned it on after that it would freeze with the lines on screen after a random amount of time.
Then today it didn't boot up normally the first two times, and third time I got the 3 red lights!
Really frustrating as I must have passed 12months by only a few weeks - will email currys and see what they can do else I'll get on to microsoft asap.

No way should they be able to charge ?85 for a (seemingly) basic repair.

As a side note I had it vertically at first (11 months), but moved house 6 weeks ago and its now (dead) horizontal in a cabinet with an open front and back for ventilation, plus a few inches each side.

edit: Just checked Currys and I got it on the 10 June last year. So 2 weeks out of warranty - awesome.

Just bought a new 360 after selling my original launch 360 at the start of the year (one of those seemed like an good idea at the time )

Just plugged it in this afternoon and started up with no problems, got all set up and then it just switched itself off, maybe a one off I thought so I turn it on and it just gets past the logo splash screen and switches itself off again.
Leave it for a few minutes and try again and it lasts a bit longer but again switches itself off. I unplug everything and it feels hotter than my launch machine used to so i'm guessing it's a fan or overheating problem; I didn't get any red lights though, when it does turn on everything seems fine until it decides to switch off!

Annoying thing is that my launch machine had no problems all the time I had it, it was alot louder than this model though. Looks like i'm going to have to go and get a replacement this week.

Has anyone else had this problem? Are there any fixes or did you get any red lights to let you know it was a hardware fault? It asked me to do a system update first which was fine - maybe the temperature threashold has been changed?

2500 returns a day in the UK alone!!! Dunno whether to laugh or feel angry.

A huge factor in that return rate must be MS's awful failure rate of refurbs.

Wasnt there meant to be a new fan/chipset designed to put a stop at the current issues that 360 issues have with hardware? Any chance that will be in all stores before the end of the summer?

I have a broken hard drive.

                        1) I can't seem to contact the Xbox Support Line - the number on the site and in the manual currently seems to be making a strange engaged tone when I ring. Anyone else had any joy?

                        2) Any ideas on the charge for replacing a borked hard drive. Out of guarantee?

Also there's an interesting point on the ask the forum section here, where someone recommends plugging in a play and charge kit, so when you switch off the 360 it's still under power and the fans continue to run as it cools down.

I wonder, has anyone ever tried to correlate failure rates in the 360 against this? I have a launch 360, and I must admit I often leave the play and charge in, and the 360 under power until I go to bed, and I've never had a failure. It could be co-incidence of course.

Apologies if it's been mentioned before on the thread, I'd never heard this suggested as a good thing to do, but it does sound plausible.

EDIT: The failed drive is one I bought!

Does the machine eventually turn off? I tried this and 1 hour later the fans were still going strong!

I don't want to leave the 360 running when I sleep..

I think the idea would be to leave it on for an hour or so after playing for the machine to cool, and then switch it off. Rather than switching off and letting it cool naturally, as I imagine that puts more stress on the innards. Possibly. It was an interesting point, I'd never really thought about it. Maybe it is why my launch machine still survives, when others have fallen.

Yes, I've mentioned it a few times in this thread aswell.

The console will only stay on for as long as it needs to charge the controller, so if you have a fully charged controller and only have a small game session, then the charging time will be short also. Usually by the time the fans switch off, my console is cool to the touch.
