November 06? There shouldn't be too much trouble returning it to the shop or retailer where you bought it. They absolutely have to cover it for the first twelve months, and most retailers know there have been serious issues and can get a refund from MS, so they'll probably cooperate. Where'd you buy it?

Bought mine in GameStation. I've just dug out the box and fortunately I had the good sense to leave the receipt inside for future use (phew!). The warranty book says MS will repair or replace it for one year from purchase so shouldn't I just call them and have it replaced?

Take it to Gamestation and get them to exchange it for you. Consumer rights FTW!!11!

Go for a replacement from the shop - regardless of what they tell you, under the Sale of Goods act it is the retailers reponsibility to repair or replace the product, not the manufacturers. The warranty from Microsoft is in addition to your consumer rights, not instead of.

I had my six month old premium 'repaired' by MS and it died again after 2 hours use. The design of the console is inherently faulty, so rather than have your's repaired (or even worse end up with a refurb) try and get a brand new replacement from Gamestation. I got one from Play.com.
Also, I read on RLLMUK that MS are now shipping UK machines to Prague for repair because they don't have the capacity over here - allegedy they're getting 2,500 a week back for repair.

            Yeah go to the shop.
You won't get some ****ty unrepaired refurb and you'll get a newer machine that theoretically is slightly more reliable.

Your lucky mate, thats why i only buy consoles from Game or Gamestation becuase its much easier to take them back if they break none of the messing around sending it back it MS.

So if I take my machine back to the shop and get it replaced, does that new machine come with a brand new 1 year warranty also, or will I be left on my own if that one breaks seeing as I won't have a receipt?

It SHOULD be covered and they'll just give you a new reciept.

Well, plus 100 kudos to GameStation. I rang up and they just said to bring in my machine and PSU, which they exchanged and gave me a new receipt as well as my old receipt back. Sweet! The manufacturing date on the back is 2006-11-10 so I can't tell if that means Oct or Nov last year, but IIRC that's when the first hardware revisions started rolling out and this new machine is certainly a lot quieter. I wasn't even sure this one had turned on to begin with because it was so quiet compared to the other one, even just idling in the dashboard. Hopefully that means it will be cooler and last longer than six months like my old one didn't.

OK, now I've got the dreaded 'can't use DLC or XBLA games without signing into Live' issue. I've heard this can be fixed by calling MS Customer Support and having them reassign the content to your new machine, is that true?

AFAIK they added extra heatsinks and stuff like that in response to all the technical problems with the launch machines.

I got the dreaded 3 light of death last night

I took it back to Currys and they replaced it no problem. The chap I spoke to was one of the most helpful assistants I have ever met.

I also took out the 5 year coverplan, which apparently, if your console breaks you give them a call, and they send out vouchers for a free Core system (I assume from Currys) and they dont ask for your faulty one, so you transfer the bits from your old premium.

So i sent a letter to GAME head office about my ****ed launch machine last Monday & got the following reply today:

I am sorry to hear that you have been expereiencing difficulties with your XBox 360 console. This console is guaranteed against manufacturing faults with us for a period of 12 months from the date of purchase, as long as it presented with a valid proof of purchase. The issue in this instance is in the question of what is "reasonable durable" and subsequently we take guidance from Microsoft on this matter. The advise received from Microsoft is that after a 12 month period has lapsed from the date of purchase we should refer customers to them directly. They advise that they take each case on its own merits.

That said,we do not want any of our customers to feel undervalued and I am happy to try and resolve this matter for you without involving Microsoft. If you would like to return your console and all assosiated accessories excluding the Hard Drive along with your proof of purchase to the freepost address below I will be happy to test the console and exchange it for you if a manufacturing fault is evident. Please note that should we exchange the unit for you a new warranty will not be provided.
"advise from MS is that after 12 months we should refer to MS"
What a load of ****. Of course MS would want that becasue then they dont have to fix it for free & can try to charge £80 for repair instead.
It's the other way round though isnt it. 12 months warranty with MS & after that its the retailers responsibilty.

Anyway Peope moan about GAME but they're definitely the best place to buy hardware from.
Should have a new machine pretty soon then. Might even end up with an extra Hard Drive too if they dont open & remove it.

Just need to decide what to do with it when it gets here. It's certain to break again at some point so im temped to just sell the piece of ****, put the money towards a PS3 later in the year & wait to see if MS fix the problem at some point...but i want to play Oblivion + the expansion.

Not looking forward to having to set up a silver account & get all the MS points refunded to buy the DLC & be able to use it offline again either. Gonna be loads of messing about.

If anyones got a faulty machine in or out of warranty stop going to ****ing Microsoft with it or buying new replacements.

Pretty sure its 12 months warranty with the store then it goes off to MS. If it were the other way around then there would be ALOT of happy people in the world as they'd never have to pay for repairs.
