I meant a minority in relation to the total number of 360s sold.

1 billion divided by approx 10 mil units - thats "only" $100 per unit. Isn't that how much they charge per replacement (or used to?) - meaning they expect the majority to need it?
      Thats an oversimplification maybe.

Microsoft aren't giving any figures out on it but independent studies from retailers and the people who repair them estimates a failure rate of about 30%.

On here we are running at about 80% failures.

There is no definite answer as to what the failure rate is but I think it's safe to assume it's around the 30% at the moment.

Remember though, that's not a definite number...

          Robbie Bach:
Since somebody will ask in the audience, I'll just answer the question, you know, "Tell me about the specific component that failed that caused you to have to do the warranty reserve." And I will tell you that it would have been easier for me from a questioning perspective to tell you that it was a specific component, but it's not. It's a design challenge that we've had to work around and create a new design to solve that problem, and for the interaction of a variety of different components. And so that's a Microsoft design question, not some component manufacturer's problem or our manufacturing partner's problems. It's something we've had to work on. We know we have a much better design in the market now. We verified that. We feel very good about the quality going forward, and we think we're going to be able to deliver on our goals for the year.
Just in case people wanted to know - it does suggest that if you haven't had it fail then it is luck rather than judgement if it is a design fault. Godd to see them not passing the buck.

how can they say they have a much better design in the market now when they have changed nothing that I am aware of.

The elite is the exact same bar a new hdmi port??

Apparently they have - by all accounts the latest batch of Elites has two heatsinks to help with cooling.

And those who know about this sort of thing are saying that since the announcement of the warranty extension, systems are coming back from repair with an extra heat sink.

Downside to that is the average turn around for repair by MS in Europe now is apparently at the 4 week mark.

That sounds right as when my console was returned for 2nd time I was quoted 25 working days turnaround!.

Im happy to wait tho as long as it does not need to go back again to be repaired.
                (finger crossed)

                  Hey guys,

DAMN IT, its happened to me.. I have had constant freezing tonight, it froze 3 times in a row, then its been freezing every few minutes, and then very soon after its frozen it freezes again..

At first I got freezing once in a blue moon but tonight its been awful.. unplayable even..

Where do I stand now? I bought the console from Gamestation in April, it was brand new.. if I take it back will they replace it with a new one or will they tell me to send to M$ for repair?

Gamestation should just replace it straight away. Give them a ring tomorrow.

Awesome.. thanks Paulos.. does it definitely sound like its on the way out then?

Also, it might sound stupid.. but how do I remove the hard drive.. would it be ok to return without the hard drive as I don't want to lose my saves!

Click in the button on the HD (bout 10cm from front of the console on the HD). keep it pressed in and lift the HD out from where the button is.

It does sound like it's dying. When mine went I kept the hard drive and the store (GAME) just replaced the console itself. Word of warning, some downloaded content (eg XBLA games) will only be available if you are connected to Live if using the hard drive on a new console.

About XBLA games: Microsoft can refund the MS points to an alternative Live account if you provide proof of the exchange (so get a receipt). They did this fairly promptly after my recent return.

Start by reading the manual but really you shouldn't need to - a cursory glance reveals all.

I pressed the button before - didn't know it had to be lifted out from where the button is since I was posting asking something anyway I thought I might as well ask that since the manual isn't easily accessible at the moment!
