Because Oblivion has been giving me grief for ages due to its long menu loading/ laggy conversations etc so i thought i'd give it a try.

Now since i've done this, i've had Oblivion crash numerous times/ stripey lines on screen (hmm... coincidence ?_?)
I was getting what sounds like the same video problem as you a few days back (I'm using a vga lead btw). My 360 was set to 1280x720 resolution to match my lcd tv's native resolution. The problem was most noticeable on Oblivion (mainly due to the amount of light & shadow in the game I think). Whilst it was less noticeable with other games the problem was still there if I looked for it (Marble Blast in particular).

I've since changed my 360's resolution to 1366x768 & I no longer get any 'banding'. If I switch back to 1280x720 though the problem's still there though.

I haven't done the cache trick so that doesn't seem to be the problem. I'm starting to wonder if it was maybe caused by MS' recent update as I think they 'tweeked' the vga output for dvd playback - could just be coincidence though.

Thing with my problem is that im using the standard RGB lead.

Have tried the system again today, and it hasnt crashed yet - though the machine wasn't logged onto XBL since it's been down for maintenance. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not.

Nevertheless, i've contacted MS support and they've sent me an email with the UPS shipping returns label/ receipt.
The fella on the line suggested i try the machine without the hard drive (and to determine whether the hard drive needs to be sent back) and it hasn't crashed. I've also tried it again with the HD attached again and it hasn't crashed. So im not quite sure whether the machine just had a mad day yesterday.

But saying that, my machine playing Oblivion (from when i purchased Oblivion on release date) has always been slow with menu loading/ conversations/ and initiating bartering. So i'm not quite sure whether the Hard Drive is to blame or not.
Yet i've seen Oblivion running on a mates 360 and he has no such issues with long loading times etc.
I dont fancy having to send the HDD back losing my saves/ achievements.

Just wondered, does UPS supply the box to put the machine in?
or do i have to supply my own box to send it in?

Just been looking at the thread about the big 360 update and there seems to be a few problems with video since it took place. However, I haven't had any crashing with Oblivion before or after the update so I think you've done the right thing contacting MS.

I'm pretty that UPS supply a box for you to send your 360 back in.

ups only supply the box if you specifically ask for it. you've the choice between the label being sent to you (with the box) or to have the label emailed instead.

my mate asked for the label to be sent and is still waiting (been nearly a month now), whereas with the six i did i just had the labels emailed and printed them out myself

My 360 froze during a game of GRAW yesterday.

I think Brats disconnected, and then it just froze. I had to do a reboot.

            Bummer.

Well, deciding to try out the console to see if the faults were a one off - it seemed ok.

Now today after switching it on i've now permantly got the 3 red lights of doom
Tried numerous resets and still the same, and with the added fact that my Oblivion disk is stuck in there... great.

Another call to XBox support methinks.

                  Just wanted to know:

UPS picked up my 360 today and it will be on its way to the Xbox repair centre soon.

How long will it take (on average) until i see a replacement?

                    Mine was literally 2 days....

Well today's been the day mine has died, sort of.

Had the machine since launch, never had an issue with it at all. Then all of a sudden today within 10 minutes of turning on NFSMW crashed.

Rebooted, appeared to work fine, but whenever any in-game graphics show on the screen it crashes (No red lights, just freezes)

Decided to try Battlefield 2. Sure enough, all intro screens work, when the in-game graphics start, it crashes.

Same with every other game, I'm called up and they're sending me a return slip. Pretty gutted cause i've treated this damn thing so careful. Hmmm

treating it carefully is neither here nor there if the fault was inherent at the manufacturing stage, which seems to be the case with all these

                        Comment

                          Yup.
I treated mine with care and it still went kaput.

                          Anyhow...
I received my replacement 360 yesterday, and i'm very impressed with the turnaround (sent Tues > received Friday) though i'm less than impressed with the condition of the refurbished unit they sent me, since the ghostbusters power-pack already had this thick brown dust like substance blocking the ventilation grille, so i had to hoover that out.
The console was slightly grimey (technition fingerprints) and the joypad has some semi-deep scuff marks on the left prong. Also a bit of plastic is chipped off the d-pad, and some grime around the edges of the analog triggers and on both analog sticks - where it contacts with rim of the pad when you pushed the directions all the way.

Well, at least Oblivion finally plays like normal!
no more excruiatingly long loading times when loading the menus and scrolling through the sub-sections. No more delayed/ laggy conversations!

working oblivion = good to hear
                            nasty hardware = yuck!

If they give me a replacement that isn't brand new i'l be kicking off royal.

Well. Replacement turned up today, didn't need to open to know it wasn't mine that had been repaired.

                                Why?

Because the stickers on the back are yellow/brown and the console is a light shade of yellow too. (Smokers!!)

To make matters worse it's loud as **** and has something loose rattling around inside.

Phoned up Microsoft again and told them the deal, also explained that the First Guy I Spoke to who arranged it to go in promised me that if mine can't be repaired it'l be replaced with a NEW console, not a refurb. (Made this point numerous times because I could have got a brand new machine with Dixons)

The guy seemed very understanding and even explained that he thinks it's unfair because the other day he was dealing with someone who had a 3day old console and was shipped a refurb because the store wouldn't deal with him as he'd lost his receipt (but could prove on a bank statement)

Anyway apparently it's out of his hands and someone from a different department needs to call me back so he took my details, read out what he put and gave me a new reference number.

Kudo's to the guy, but bad IMO for Microsoft. If you have a car thats under warrenty and something goes wrong they repair the fault. Personally i'd rather wait and have mine repaired than a refurb.

                                Fingers crossed
