    Thanks Tal.

This little setback has scuppered the Halo 3 campaign plans I had in mind

But if I use VGA with a disc in the drive the console doesn't boot up at all.
If I start it without a disc in it takes a good minute before the Xbox logo appears
I'm having the exact same problem with the new Premium I got. It whirred like a bitch when a disc was in and didn't load up until I ejected.

Then I changed the startup from the console settings to Dashboard instead of Disc and it loads up with a disc in the tray, but still takes a good 30 seconds to do so.

      I am also using VGA.

        Hello all,

I've submitted my repair order via Xbox.com, what's supposed to happen now? I did expect to receive an e-mail or something but nothing has turned up.

Get your machine boxed up and ready to go. UPS usually turn up next working day with the shipping label in hand, so get prepared. Just the console, no accessories: i.e. hard drive.

If they haven't been on Monday phone MS up and check the order has actually been issued, because they f'd my one up and I had to get them to re-issue the repair order.

I didn't know you could submit them via Xbox.com.

That's pretty handy to know so you don't have to spend 30 minutes trying to get a phone monkey to even remotely help you in getting your system sorted.

It would be great if it worked, I've managed to report the problem but the emial that explains what to do next never arrives, spoke to the helpline who said wait till tomorrow and call them then if I still havent got it. sigh.

I had a go at the x-clamp replacement on my 360 before they announced the 3 year thing, but it's still ****ed with RROD, would I get away with sending it back? The innards have quite obviously been tampered with....

Mt 360 makes a rattling noise now and again which is very alarming as its a brand new machine manufactured in August

                  Im waiting on the inevitable

Are you sure the rattling noise isn't just the sensor that detect if the machine is horizontal or vertical? That's what rattles in mine.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about a rattling, seems to be normal for the most part. I've had it in my launch machine since I got it.

Yeah I used to worry about the machine making the rattling noise - it's probably the position detector as stated. I've had four machines and they all do it.

Alternatively, it could be your DVD tray front's come loose.

It occurs in vertical and horizontal position. I gave the console a slight tap last time ti rattled and it had not affect.

Cheers for the replies, you have put my mind at ease.

I hope someone can help me with this.
I still have a launch console (yeah that is rare!) and it's working fine so far except for this very weird thing.
When a disc is in my tray and I turn my console on, it hangs at the start with the 360 logo. But it doesn't really freeze. The animation with the moving lights still continue and when I open the tray it does go to the dashboard.
It doesn't happen all the time, but once in a while it does (with every game).
When no disc is in my 360, everything starts up fine.

I have no disc read errors with games, so I'm not sure what this is :/

It's like it wants to read the title of the game (to show it in the dashboard) but fails. This happened since last week, before I never had such problems...

I can live with it though, but it's kinda weird. Games still work fine without any freezes when they actually started

Sadly, you appear to have one of the DVD drives that Halo 3 "dislikes". It's something to do with access times and Halo 3 having a smaller window that it'll wait for data to be transferred before it chucks up a DRE. You can try playing without an HDD (with your profile on memory card) and you can still play Live multiplayer this way, but not online co-op. Apparently waiting for the HDD to cache just adds to the likelihood of DREing.

Only way around it is to buy a new 360. MS ftw!
