Why not go on ebay and bid for an xbox 360 box? I'm sure I've seen a few reputable traders selling them on for a couple of hundred quid....

Did they not tell you when they issued the repair order not to send it back in the Xbox box? They normally do.

No, but I arranged it via the website as the call centre was useless. I didn't have anything else to send it back in that was suitable.

I was playind COD4 and then when finished I just edjected the DVD.

There was a horrible "GRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIND" noise.

Now when I eject a disc, or when the disc spins up, I get this terrible grinding noise!!

          Anyone had this?

My first 360 died due to disc reads and hang, but this one is still going but it can't be right. In 20 years of CD roms I've never heard anything like it.

Sounds like the plastic disc that rests on top of the inserted dvd in the drive has melted/bust.....theres a fix for it, but you'd have to invalidate your warranty to fix it - best to wait a couple of months until the inevitble 3lod rears its ugly head then send it back to MS....

Looks like my 3rd is down I've had a couple of unreadable disk errors when trying to load Halo 3 from launch, but put them down to the scratchy disk, tonight the machine is giving continual unreadable disk errors on every game I insert though, and not playing ball at all.

Obviously something has been going wrong which must of been excentuated by the scratchy Halo 3 disk, and it's just given up the ghost once and for all tonight.

Anyone found a way to get around these errors, or is it terminal ? If it is anyone got a fool proof way a red lighting one of these buggers ? No way I'm paying a repair just because MS are only extending warranties for the more advertised fault.

No way I can go weeks without a machine to game on - decision now is whether to get an Elite and trade this one in when it comes back - or to forget xbox for a while and grab a Wii and some Mario !

Is the new chipset in the Elites now, or are they still just a rumour ?

Playing Assasins Creed and i get to one point in the game and keep getting the 'this disc can not be read' message.

Cleaned the disc and still the same, 3 time now. Is this a disc error, or more than likely the machine?

Never had it before, although the machine has had a refurb once.

I got this with Halo 3 (and very occasionally Forza 2).

It's probably the drive. It's very stressful on it in games that stream constantly and some games obviously are harsher than others. You could try cleaning the drive's optic with a squizz of compressed air, but it's best to do that by actually opening the drive up, in which case a) unless you're very careful there goes your warranty sticker, although it is possible to get in without ruining it and b) if you're going to do that, you might as well give the DVD pot a tease while you're there to see if that helps.

It probably won't though. 360 drives seem to cook and croak quite quickly. You could also try clearing the HDD cache or playing without HDD, as waiting for the game to cache can also make impatient games think they can't read the data they want fast enough.

My warranty has long gone. It's a US machine that MS wouldn't fix so i had to get it repaired independently.

How do i do a pot tease, as a Google brought up nothing?

My 5th machine has gone last night graphics card/chip by the looks of things. Got quoted a 25day turnaround by the oh so helpful support line.It has a permenanet E74 error which is usually HDD related I believe.

They are quoting 5 working weeks turn around now? That's awful service.

I was quoted 15 days (and got it back after 16) but even that felt too long. Seems indicative that the problem is getting worse, not better

According to this - http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair...rror-codes.htm it's either the AV cable (if you're lucky), or an internal graphics chip fault (if you're unlucky)

Was thinking of trying a trade in on mine for an Elite at Game, really don't see why I should pay to get it repaired. I'm told that they try a game in the drive before excepting them in for trade though, so I guess that ideas out the window. Was kind of just hoping they'd switch it on and that would be enough !

Is it a standard repair charge with MS ? If I can't get the bugger to red light then I guess I'm stuck paying.

Mass Effect just landed on my desk to rub some intergalatic salt into the wound

It used to be a 3 day turnaround, that's what mine came back in 5 months after launch !
