Sale of Goods to consumers Regulations 2002 is your friend. I'm paraphrasing a bit but:

You have the right to choose repair, replacement, partial or full refund if a fault appears within 6 years and it is reasonable for goods to last that long.

I would choose "replacement" in this case.

That doesn't apply to retailers, mind, it's the original manufacturer. A retailer doesn't "have" to swap or refund an item past six months.

Not unless they are aware of your particuar problem on your machine when you bought it

I finally got it to red ring by getting it to the point where it was freezing during the 360 splash screen and then turning it on and off a few times in quick succession. Only took a few tries for it to do it.

I rang MS and they said a maximum of 15 days which I can deal with. That should get it back in time for COD4, and then I'll hold onto the replacement until Elites become a bit more commonplace.

Now...what to play. I suppose I could always turn on the PS3...

Lol, I think I might try that or the towel trick seeing as the Blue Veins of Death(TM) haven't gone away and my machine is crashing with alarming regularity on HL2.

                Interesting experience of the day:

When I called Microsoft originally they told me that they'd email shipping labels for me to print out myself. I hadn't received them today (two days later) so I rang them and they said that the shipping labels were coming in the post and it would take 3-5 days from the original call. Then about 15 minutes ago UPS turned up to pick it up with the shipping labels. I've never packaged anything up so fast in my life.

                10/10 for communication, Microsoft

I also got some interesting info from the UPS guy who told me that he has five other 360s on his van to go back to Microsoft and that they pick up 3,000 machines a week. His daughter wanted one for Christmas but the things he's seen in the line of work means that he won't let her have one

Yep - that is the general experience. Get your console's packed up as soon as you're off the phone to MS - UPS usually turn up unannounced.

When I got called upon I had to go and buy a box and then phone for a recollection. Luckily I was quick and the same guy came straight back.

EDIT: @anephric: I had to call a second time because they failed to initiate the return properly!

I had to phone three times to get them to email me my labels. Pft.

The UPS experiences above are so different to mine. In fact, overall the experience I had with the return process has been good (well as good as sending a broken console can be).

Received my shipping label within 24 hours, contacted UPS for pickup who provided a 3 hour window and package was picked up during the time period agreed. Really well handled all told.

I got a new Elite Sunday just gone and get the red ring of death on first start-up. I then shut down and start again and it's fine - sometimes it takes a few. I only get issues during start after a long peroid of inactivity. Is there a AV sequence to start the elite i.e. turn on the LCD first? Any ideas chaps? Thanks in advance.

Must admit MS & UPS were spot on with my collection/repair/return. Couldn't have gone smoother.

Chewy, have no idea, I just switch monitor on first as habit.

@Chewy - I take it you're getting the 3 red lights and not the 4 red lights? If you get the 4 red lights it means the AV cable isn't connected properly or is broken.

What do you mean by an "AV sequence"?
