Yeah i thought the new drive made a new whistling disc reading sound when i had my (now dead) refurb console.

    Just a little update:
Got my UPS shipping label and printed it off.
Called UPS to arrange for a pickup today. Console has left the building, so hopefully (going by the previous turnaround) i should have yet another refurb by Friday.
    Good show on their behalf.

Now lets see if this one lasts more than a week

I haven't had any problems with my 360, but something strange happened tonight; we had a very brief power cut, literally a second or two and I was in the 360 dash at the time. The console turned off and back on again very quickly, but instead of booting up, three quadrants were flashing red as was the green power icon in the middle, I was hoping the power cut hadn't just broken it so I turned it off for a couple of minutes and thankfully it's still working fine, but it was a bit worrying under the circumstance.

Sec UK is Securicor UK isn't it? I think Microsofts customer services have been excellent at handling and returning faulty consoles.

Strangely enough MJ you have described what exactly happened to me about a month or so ago - with my first 360. Our house had a short powercut for a few seconds. When booting up the console it gave the 3 red lights.

I left the machine off for a while then reloaded and all seemed fine.

Now i'm going to be on my third machine soon...

I just hope that your 360/ powercut experience isn't a sign of things to come

It went straight from dash, power cut, three flashing red quadrants in literally a second. I was not happy! ft:

That's odd. When mine did it, it was still green. The 3 red lights is usually overheating. If you had a power cut, you could have got a surge up the line, overpowering the console. Maybe.

There's a diagnotic which can be done with the wireless bind button on the front of the console. Google around for it if you get them again. It will either be overheating or an 'unknown hardware error'.

I received the console back today, and i got another grubby refurb. It's even muckier than the first one i got!

Had it froze once on Oblivion while entering a door (looking ominious now) and upon restarting the machine, i could hear the sound, but it was not dispalying an image on the tv...
another reboot of the machine sorted it out.
But other than that, it's been ok so far *crosses fingers*

However, the DVD drive does make a slightly higher pitch sound than the last one (which also had the toshiba-samsung drive) and it also makes this weird high pitch disc accessing sometimes (similar to sounding like it's scratching the disc) when on Oblivion when it's loading certain things like people greeting you/ loading up enemies.

I'll give it two weeks at least before it dies again *sigh*

My refurb DVD drive was like that, it was also very clunky opening and closing the drive. But then it started making all these horrible clicking noises so it went back

I'd like to apologise in advance for the following outburst.

AAAAAARGHHHH!! STUPID MS AND THEIR CRAPPY HARDWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, my 8 month old 360 is now dead.

Nary a problem since day one and then tonight I settle down for some gaming and `poof` - screen distortion followed by the red lights of death

Nothing left but to give MS a ring but I'm not holding out much hope, what with me having a US unit.

First console I've ever had break on me

Oof, unlucky. And with Dead Rising so close to release and all...

I have a nagging fear that mine will eventually end up the same way.

I've never been in here before. Just look at that poll. That's put the fear in me.

In fairness, there are people here who bought on launch day (US and UK) who haven't had any problems with their system, but once it happens to you have to question if it's just a matter of time for them as well?

After 8 months I though I was home free, but obviously not. I think you just have to accept if you buy a 360, there's a strong possibility that something will end up going wrong with it (not that it's acceptable for it to break in the first 12 months).

                            If it doesn't, then it's a bonus.

                            edit:

Just phoned Xbox support and ended up speaking to some French bloke?

From speaking to him it was clear he was on the continent and thought I was in the US.

He seemed totally clueless (he even went `woah!` when I gave him the serial number as it flagged up I had a US system).

He said it's out of warranty, but they could repair it but he could only give me the price in Euro's. Just convereted it and it'll cost ?70 for repair.

Think I'm going to phone back and try and get some sense out of someone else...

                            edit 2:

Now some Swedish bloke who said they couldn't do anything at all

Are weekend support calls diverted elsewhere?

What annoys me is that a replacement console affects your Arcade games being played offline.

                              I hope mine survives!

Yes, they have what is known as a virtual call centre - call one number and you can end up anywhere! It sucks.
