Man, I would do but I bought all these games and accessories..

Reading further it seems loads have this problem, its caused by the abscence of little pads that stop the DVD lens from touching the disc in this particular type of drive..

People reckon if they admit theres a problem they will be swamped with consoles for repair and requests to replace / refund for damaged discs..

    This makes me so mad!

You can try gamestation as you mentioned and see how you get on.

Did you try any other games in your last console to see if it froze with other games and not just cod ?.

I have heard from friends about discs being scratched etc.

I'm looking at my other games now and they all have the same circular line in the same place - is it supposed to be there??? ffs..

Can anyone check their 360 games and tell me if they have a circular ring at around 5mm from the part of the disc with the numbers and barcode on? i.e. 5mm from the centre where the data layer starts..

It froze once with Overlord, before I took it back.. but its freezing all the time with CoD3, ive tried clearing the cache on the HDD and everything ?

EDIT: My Halo 2 disc has 7 of these thin "scratch" lines on it, and other games have one scratch line near the centre, but nearer than 5mm from the edge?

          Just emailed Activison and I get this reply back;

"Thank You for contacting Activision Customer Support.
Please note: Activision Customer Support no longer accepts emails"

Then some spiel about going on the website, registering an account and asking a question on it.. so I go on there, and it tells me to "click here for outside of the US" and I do it.. and then it tells me to email the email address that I got the above reply from, or ring the 0870 number!!

Balls!! Its a world gone mad!!!

We've swapped discs in our store in the past for people, your local store may, guess it depends on who serves you.

We repair discs at work and the amount of circular scratched discs we get is ridiculous, it's disgusting that Microsoft don't admit to it, they're full of ****.

Chaoticjelly, I had the same problem.

Bought my 360 from Blockbuster and a few weeks in noticed it was making a nice circular scratch on my GoW disc. Spoke to MS. They told me that 360s don't scratch discs. I could take it back to the shop I bought it from or send it in 'for investigation'. Took it back to Blockbuster and they replaced the 360 and were nice enough to replace the disc. They told me to lay the console flat as having it vertical 'scratches the discs'.

No problems then until Forza 2 came out which I got on release day. Again, nice circular scratches in the disc.

Both these 360s had a Samsung drive. This drive seems to be the problematic one which scratches discs.

Phoned MS who again denied that the 360 would scratch discs, but told me I would need to send the 360 in for them to investigate. They didn't want the Forza 2 disc despite that being the most compelling piece of evidence. If their investigation found that the drive was the cause of a problem, then I would have to deal with them in a seperate process to sort out replacing the Forza 2 disc.

They collected the console and within a couple of weeks returned it with a new drive fitted. *Not* a Samsung drive which is very telling. Also in the package was a confirmation document that the drive was faulty and had been replaced.

With this document at hand, I phoned MS again to sort out the Forza 2 disc. This was the most frustrating part of the whole drama. The person I spoke to told me I could use their disc replacement service. When I pointed out that a) this would cost me b) I had a confirmation slip in my hand which admits that the drive was faulty and therefore damaged the disc in the first place, he still told me there was nothing they could offer apart from the disc replacement service. I had to argue my point very very insistently, then demanded to speak to a supervisor. Finally they agreed to replace the disc. I must have been on the phone for about 20 minutes. Shocking.

My advice would be to persist. Check out the drive in your machine too. If it's a Samsung one there's a whole ton of evidence on the internet supporting your claim.

Wonderful customer service - seems I was too quick to give MS the benefit of the doubt after the repair bill write off. Maybe its a new financial year for them?

                  Take it to THE MAN

                  E-mail Steve Ballmer For A New 360

Sometimes (actually, all the time), it pays to be a savvy consumer. Example: Guy by the name of AlteredBeast, a reader over at Kotaku blood-brothers The Consumerist, was having Xbox 360 troubles. Like, he was on his sixth unit after things like the red rings of death and poorly-handled refurb units (they'd arrive having been broken in the mail). When he called MS support to complain, he was bumped all the way to the top of the customer service chain, at which point he was told there was nothing he could do. Oh, wait, there was something he could do. He could email Steve Ballmer. So he did, and two days later got a new, working 360. Let's hear it for the little guy!

Just got mine back. UPS collected 7th July, back today and working so far.

Forgot how noisy these things are (compared to my PS3).

If it breaks againt though, it's Game Over, no game is worth the hassle we have all had with these machines.

5 weeks, that is far too long, thought MS were fairly quick at turning them around.

Mine (10 months old) is having problems opening the disc tray 50% of the time, when playing up, only seems to work when open is pressed for about fourth time. Tray moves a couple of mm but then thinks it's closing and reads the disc, same thing happens if there's a disc if the drive or not.

Tried it both vertically and horizontally and same thing happens.

Anyone heard of a similar problem ? sorry, been fortunate enough not to have to read much of this thread. So far.

                        Ta.

The courier who picked mine up on Monday said it's usually 6 weeks or so before people get them back at the moment!

I had that towards the end of the life of my second machine. A bit annoying, but worked eventually. The scary thought is that if it completely refused to open it would be dead as a games console!

I think I read at the time that someone had fixed it easily by opening up the console. Hardly worth voiding the warranty for, though.
