That's it though, they will probably claim that it supports xvid as part of the dash update (Divx wasn't mentioned in the rumour) but the media extenders will be branded with the divx logo on the front/box or something.

And even if they do support MKV, will they support the features of MKV such as multiple audio tracks etc?

Hell, I know I'm in the minority here, but most of my files are .VOB, or .ts/.mpg HDTV stream rips.

It's still be no replacement for a small mini PC in terms of being a complete media solution.

But hey, maybe it'll start a chain reaction, and get Sony adding this and more too?
For it to be a complete media solution it's gonna have to support x.264, all the HD stuff is encoded into that these days.

Yes but I'd still take their hand off for native XVID support in Media Center. I use Transcode360 now to play XVIDs, and it does work, but has it's issues and there's obviously a quality drop because of the realtime transcoding.

Personally I don't have much use for Xvid or Divx support, my PC is hooked up to the TV and the only reason I sometimes use the 360 is to play 1080p WMV stuff which my PC can't really handle very well. And we all know MS will never be able to give us all the options we want and need to be able to replace a PC as media center. I still applaud their effort though and I can see how it's useful for people who can't have their PC set up as media center.

*Insert my usual moan about still not being able to switch off all other alerts except achievement notifications HERE*

Actually I think unless I actually suggest that to the Dashboard dev team it's never going to happen (and in reality it probably won't even if I do suggest it). Anyone have an email address for that sort of thing?

Please can we have "slow DVD drive down till it's quiet"?

Xvid support - over streaming too?

The xvid support is still just a rumour and I'd take it with a pinch of salt. MS codec support has historically been very poor and for them to finally give in and actually give people what they want at this stage would really be something.

DIVX is a possibility at some point as they are at least a properly run and funded company. XVID though is legally dubious to say the least.

Any device that supports DivX will be able to support XviD, because both codecs are implementations of the Mpeg4 ASP codec, and both comply with the Mpeg4 ASP specification.

DivX certification simply means it supports the certification profiles required to gain the DivX logo and official DivX backing.

Are you sure about that? I've heard about DIVX compatible DVD players which won't play XVID back at all.

Guess it'd have to be since the 360 won't read DVDR's. It would be nice if it could detect USB storage devices though.

The IPTV thing sounds like it could be good though. Be nice to be able to "tape" Match Of The Day and Top Gear etc.

                                Errr..

Mine reads DVD-r's fine, Infact i was watching a DVD i made of my honeymoon in Vegas last night.

It also reads usb storages devices, but they have to be FAT32 - I have a 500GB external drive formatted in HFS+ for WMV files as FAT32 won't support large partitions or files above 2GB iirc.
