The stand-out rubbish moments in fantastic games.

Inspired from a thread on Eurogamers forum, I thought it would be nice to see what other moments you folks can come up with in regards to those rather questionable parts in those games that are highly thought of.

I'm pleased with the three I have managed to come up with so far:

    1. The part where you had to drive that enormous truck-like vehicle in Gears of War; absolutely ****e and was almost the game breaking moment where I decided to quit but I did manage after 30+ tries.

The questionable mechanic used is that you can’t drive and aim the spotlight-like cannon at the Kryll so you had to switch between the driving and shooting while you progress onwards down the highway. It doesn’t sound bad on paper but it really is a case of luck and is down to how patience you are.

On the insane mode however, it made me come up with new swear words I hadn’t previously thought existed.

    2. The Sky Temple Key quest in Metroid Echoes and the Tri-Force quest in Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Not only are they the worse possible way to make the game feel longer than it should be, they are also as much fun as making several dozen cups of tea for your family and friends on a special occasion.

If those two 'quests' were cut out of the game altogether,
I would hail both games as a classic/masterpiece/spellbinding experience and so forth if it wasn't for those utterly daft and pointless quests.

    3. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a wonderful game with one particular moment that made me thought about giving the entire game up altogether and break controller after controller to pieces.

The elevator section in which you go up the Tower of Dawn (at the 81% save point, if I remember correctly) where you have to not only make sure Farah doesn't die but fight some of the toughest enemies in the game and is made worse by the repetition of the entire battle.

Lovely game Ubisoft but goodness me, did anybody test this particular section of the game before going gold?

The whole of 'Xen' in Half-Life. Amazingly realised expansive science base and desert canyons suddenly disappears in favour of an alien planet. The only way they could've topped that is with Gordon waking up and realising it was all a dream.

      Good thread .

Usually any level that breaks to mould of the game to tries and introduce a bit of variety ends up being a tacked on ropey experience, like the Gears example. See also:

The "jump across a billion platforms to get to the other side but inevitably fall off and die" bit in Turok 1 on the N64. I actually threw an N64 controller through a window, breaking it, due to the at level. Ass.

The Library level in Halo, the repetitive aspect was very grating...

The last third of Bioshock and the ending.

If any game was heading towards legendary status it was that until then.

The worst I can think of is from Dead or Alive 4.

The last fight of the arcade, that Kasumi clone. All the fighters behave properly, but this boss teleports, never misses his combos (that take almost your entire health bar for that matter) and blocks everything you throw at him.

I can't understand why it is done like this. Tekken 4 is the same, the Jinpachi (i think is what is called) behaves the same way.

And in every escort mission, why does the person your escorting throws himself at the enemies all the time?
Can't we at least order them to stay put so i can dispatch those goons over there so we can proceed safely?

I think this was what you were after? Probably i missed the point.

I would agree with the end of dead or alive 4. THe clone ranks as my most frustrating game moment ever. Right below that is the spiked columns in god of war.

Can't agree with Jinpachi though. Always found him pretty easy in tekken 5.

Xen in Half-Life, especially the battle against the Nihilanth. What a ****ty ending to an awesome game!

The Hades bit with all the instant kill timed obstacles and pixel-perfect jumping was bloody annoying.

And everything after the tanker in MGS 2. ****!

The second last level in Halo 3. While it's satisfying up to a point, it's pretty repetitive, even by Halo standards, and the level design is abominable.

Actually, everything after the fourth (I think) level in Halo 1 counts too. Amazing start to a game but my god did it get boring.

That's a bit more than a moment though.

How about a thread on fantastic moments in rubbish games?

the difficulty curve jump in sega ralley revo where you suddenly go from winning every race easily to coming last as everybody seems to have a quicker car than you that can corner on rails.

Those bloody chess pieces in DMC3. What tosh they were. Boring, labrynthine level, too.

The final boss of Lost Planet. Take one great game, spend many hours running around getting used to combat in mechs and on foot. Then throw all of that out the window and introduce a poorly realised version of ZOEs controls purely for the last battle. Completely took the edge off of what could have been a decent finish to the game.

Episode 2, spoilered as no doubt people are still playing it

Fantastic game, but you will forever hate Striders and Hunters after that infuriating last level. Completely useless friendly AI coupled with Valve being unable to resist the urge to introduce ANOTHER use for the Gravity Gun. Seriously, couldn't they just give me a Magnusson Device cannon ffs. I loved every minute of Ep2 except those spent fighting the poxy Striders.

I could never really be arsed with the alien levels at the end of Perfect Dark.

                              Last boss of Dead Rising.

Capcom have had a bad run with last bosses recently
