I've seen side scrollers referred to as "beat 'em all" games. Sounds atrocious to me though.

I was going to chime in and say that but didn't for fear of reprisal.

        As far as I'm concerned:

Beat 'em up = double dragon etc..

        Street Fighter = fighter

and never the twain shall meet....

I share most peoples' total disillusionment with 3D fighting games. I've never played one that can match the tactile involvement or prescision of a staple 2D fighter. I figure that 2D fighters are difficult enough to learn without wasting time on all the 3D drek out there. Having said that I'm gonna give vf4 evo a go as a last stab at likeing 3d fighters. If it doesn't click I'm going back to SF3, Garou, Zero 3 etc... and never looking back. No amount of button mashing will get you anywhere in any of these.

          now breakers revenge!

          Now we're talkin

totally agree - Breakers rev is fast and fulid and has a nice combo system.

Much more fun to play than the rather wooden early street fighter games *ducks for cover*

The neo geo hyper SS games are nice, albeit a little slow

I really like AOF3 - I only discovered it about 6 weeks ago. I love the totally random story - like when you have to beat that guy up because he thinks you're picking on his pelican. I really like the fighting style too, I think its good for the gameplay that the sprites fill the screen, and the zooming is beautiful for a 2D game. One of my favourite things is the way you can move forward at the same time as attacking. I really like the purity of the gameplay.
I haven't played Breakers Revenge, but I may have to try and get hold of it, - it sounds really good.

I'm always surprised when people don't like Tekken. I used to have evenings with my friends (before they all coupled up and got boring) when we would play Tekken 3, Super Bomberman 1+2 on SNES, and Super Mario kart, and Tekken was definitely a very fun game to play. We had the most fun especially when you could keep pounding your mate after the KO. I don't really agree with button bashers being able to beat an experienced player. Blocking and counter-attacking fools most button bashers. Low sweeps are always good, and also the favourite side-step followed by a throw. The killer is anticipating the button bashers rush in and doing a double-dpad + punch/kick. I could win every game with Hworang, and Jin (becaue I knew these characters).

The problem i think is playing the in-game AI is nothing like playing a real opponent. I played my mum once (ages ago) at Soul Calibur and had trouble with her constant hi/low attacking. I had been playing on a very high skill level in Arcade mode previously, and had never experienced a fighting style like it! I did beat her of course, but it could have been embarassing - I wish the in-game AI was better (more varied).

Really like my beat em ups, could never get on with 2d ones, I couldn't understand what was going on, X-Men Children of the Atom was diabolically stupid.

Tekken is my favourite followed by SC, the three buttons of VF feel strange with Tekken's one button for each limb setup which seems more natural.

Agree with buzz909 v the button bashers, usually a quick launch say with DF+1 puts you into a good juggle opportunity with Nina say or low-sweeps etc.

I've been worried about a similar sort of thing. I've always been an SF2 guy but recently I'm just not bothered about learning any radically different fighting games such as the SNK ones and VF/Tekken/SC. Although I had a bit of a revelation watching the SSF2T finals there. They were absolutely amazing to watch, all that speed and those combos, two characters jumping about the place giving their everything. Then came the Tekken finals and I left after the first match. It was just so boring for me to watch. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate the fans would find it great, but for me it didn't have that magic. And that's sort of one of the reasons I haven't bothered perservering with Tekken at least. I'm not having a go at Tekken or its followers, I'm just saying the 'magic' wasn't apparent for me at least.

Although, taking part in Battle of Destiny a few weeks back made me realise it's perfectly fine to be stuck in the past with SSF2T and I have no qualms about not going beyond that (although naturally I'll get round to 3S one of these days. Yeah, right...). The only time it's really an issue for me is when I go round to mates' houses and I'm in a room full of people, none of whom can play SF at all but can kick arse in Tekken/VF/SC/DOA/etc. Mind you, it's more interesting as in those situations, I much prefer getting battered to being the one doing all the battering while both yawning and yearning for a decent challenge

I wouldn't worry about it, mate. You've got nothing to prove to these new kids on the block

I totally agree with you. Ive tried to play 3D fighters in the past but have never got on with them. Were you at BOD? I was in the Quarter finals againest Yamasaki but i totally caved under the pressure! I made so many mistakes, playing in that situation on a projector with 200+ people watching is too much. It was like playing ST for the first time.

I suck at super turbo , well I have a strong guile, but I am pretty sure I'd get owned in serious competition.

vs Yamasaki? What was your tournament name? Man, I can't even imagine what kind of pressure you'd be under. Was being behind the screen a bit more relaxing than if you were in full view of the crowd?

I tried using that but it was used I think, same as my AIM name, 'wonderfulkern', I need a working SSF2T rom actually as thats the only game I don't have a working one for I think.

Its amazing being able to play 3S with very little lag. love it. I'm usually on that or alpha 2, maybe a bit of kof98
